Title: dynamat to quieten down exhaust
Post by: paultownsend on 12 November 2008, 13:37
my milltek is loud. esp so after the new engine.
i spent yesterday with my bike in the boot, parcel shelf out, and seats down. and its soo much louder.
so will adding some dynamat type sound deadening quiet things down a little. most the sound seems to be coming through the boot floor!

Put a less ghey back box on it and don't put dynaleadmatting into it, thus saving weight and maintaining performance.

ghey back box? the difference the full milltek exhaust made from a brand new oe vw system was night and day. i bought the vw system because the milltek was too loud. but it would not let me pull in higher gears. at all.  the 2.0 8v gives storming pull between 70-100 in 4th. and it killed it!

the milltek is also a odd bore size, and not compatible with other aftermarket stuff

Don't be obtuse.  No one's said refit the VAG system.

Most of the tuning of the noise is done on the back box - if you don't like the noise, change the back box.

Don't try telling us that you couldn't possibly change the exhaust either - anyone with a grinder and a welder can make whatever changes they want to an exhaust.

I very much doubt that Milltek use their own custom drawn, uniquely sized tubing for their Golf2 exhausts.  If you've not found an alternate back that fits then you've just not looked hard enough.  You could always use a reducer or enlarger section in the exhaust, if you can't weld.

Have you spoken to Milltek about the problem?  You may well find that they can provide a quiet-pack rear silencer anyway.

Lead matting is definitely not the answer.

its definately over a 2.25 bore, which is over 16v or g60 size. wish id gone for the bl00dy jetex now! probably right about the matting though. it is very heavy.

its strange because on the pb lump it was ok. its only after the 2.0, bigger ex valves etc, its gotten worse. emissions are dandy though. just assume its kicking a little more gas out

Ya think?

Possibly this is your issue - far more gasses exiting in a far more enthusiastic manner.

Plus it's tuned to sound 'bad-assed'.

Miltek do two sytstems normally one with a centre box the other without? Do you know which system you have??  they also tend to be much Higher quality than other systems, Im still saving for mine!!  :nerd:

its a 3 box system.

the quality of the exhaust is awesome.better than anything 'production' iv seen. i had a supersprint race system on my mk1 and that was so heavy, and never fitted properly.

i chose the milltek because i had one of their full systems, sports cat and manifold on my zetec s fiesta. it was a first production designed by milltek and pumaspeed, and we did a before/after dyno run for other customers to see on a otherwise std car. 18bhp, and more importantly, it turned it into a little monster!  it also does it job on the golf! - just a little too loud sometimes :(  il give them a email tomorrow
