Title: Only problems?
Post by: Egbutt Wash on 11 November 2008, 23:51
Are they a joy to drive or what?
The Mk2 has a reputation, but this forum makes me think they are a pain in the bottom to own.

Am I wrong?

theyre great to drive but with any old car unless its concourse you will have to get your hands dirty as things tend to go wrong from time to time, but youget hat with new cars as well except you cant fix it yourself as everything is in a box with its own sodding computer

im sure most people on here will agree

A joy to drive rather depends on what you have done with them. But like any old car, they now need nursing. Personally, I would rather put the work into something else a little more classic.
So anyone want a G60? Mine is going up for sale soon!

On a ratio of forum members to problem threads posted, probably about the same as a mk5.

Look at it this way.
When they are well sorted, back to factory fresh or even a few components then improved upon they are great to drive.

Most are around 20 years old, you will have issues, but a Mk1/2 is like Lego for adults. I've had my simple 8v daily for 4 years now and have had to sort so much out, I could have spent the same money on a Mk4 or even Mk5 maybe, But I didn't and I wouldn't.

It depends on what you want / expect from the ownership experience as well as the driving rewards.

Noshy, I've had my MK2 just over a year now and the only things I've had to replace to keep the car going were the brakes, wheel bearing I f**ked up when changing the hand brake cable oh and a filter, oil & plug change.

Not bad to keep a 20yr old MK2 running for a year, wouldn't you say? The only other things that need changing are my tyres soon.

My MK2 is much better to drive than Ford Escorts, Ford Focus, and even my brother in law's 06 Passat 2.0TDi which is a boat in comparison (but doesn't feel as bad as it looks).

(excluding the obvious insurance, tax and petrol)

Sometimes its also about what you like too, not just the driving aspect of it. I just love the Mk2 golf from every angle and its nice to have a ride that you just dont see every day on the roads

Damn right George i love that my 22 year old car still gets respect.
Ive owned it for nearly 3 years and only really needed new clutch and heater matrix. Apart from silly mot bits and obvious services its been a rock.
Everything is so simple and cheap to fix so i dont mind when things go wrong.
Love every second of the drive. For a car of its age it rules

I hate both of mine now,

one is a short term issue, the other might take a LOT longer

That's only cos you keep poking them with the "Brake it" stick

Stop poking and they'll be fine
