will take you about 5 minutes to do depending on how tight the plastic nut is that you have to take off.

lift up your boot carpet , on your right there should be a black circular cover - held in by three screws if i remember correctly.

take this off and then unscrew the massive black plastic nut. disconnect everything adn you should be able to just lift out the old pump. replace it with your new one anad away you go mate. ; :)

Haven't checked my cab but done plenty of mk1's, I'm 90% sure it'll be the same............. you remove the base of the rear seat and underneath that is a round black metal plate, approx. 8" in diameter. Its held in place by 3 screws, remove them and then the plate.........it may be sticky due to sealant. Underneath you sould find the top of the tank sender unit with 2 small pipes and an electrical connector......this is different to a mk2 which has the big plastic nut that is a 'mare' to undo. Remove the connector and the 2 flexible pipes and then twist off the plate. I usually find 2 large flat bladed screwdrivers work well for removing it.

Hope that helps............

what about the pressure in the fuel tank?do i need to do something before i take the old pump out?.i don't fancy having petrol blown out into my mush!! :-\

Dont think theres any pressure to speak of in the mk1 tank. You should be fine as long as you're not smoking at the time......

If you're worried about pressure in the tank, just take the fuel cap off!

There won't be any pressure in the tank unless the breathers are blocked.
As rub says just remove the fuel cap.

Post by: eyeletboy on 26 July 2004, 20:40
where is it?and how do you test it? :-[

in the tank its a float on an arm connected to a variable resistor if it is sticking/faulty it could be the problem.

probably you have checked this but does the needle on the fuel gauge go back to zero when the ignition is off. ie the needle isnt sticking is it.

check your pump in the tank again, but this time using a cocktail stick move the propellers around inside using that small opening on the bottom of the pump, the pump maybe working but the propeller may been knackered mine fell off, so it will buzz away but not actually do anything. and have a look in the bottom for any crap in the tank, that screws up your pump and makes it work on off on off. just an idea cured mine

if the gauge is reading fuel and it runs out of petrol personally i would check the gauge first as if there is no petrol the pump has nothing to pick up anyway.

sorry carrie, yes the fuel gauge is going back to zero when the ignition is off.the last time the car done this i checked if there was petrol in her and there was so that lead me to the fuel pumps.

ah, you implied it was running out of petrol

"quote"

checked the fuel pump in my tank and found out that it's working any suggestions why my car runs out of petrol when it's showing a quarter of a tank on the needle?

probably another fault such as pump then as 8valve said

when it runs out of petrol as mentioned is the tank bone dry?
you tried starting it again 10 minutes later?

unless someone has either had the dash out which is highly unlikely to effect the fuel read out, then your sensor in the tank is dodgy or the float arm is not sitting at the bottom of the tank correctly,

mine ran up till half a tank then it stopped, you couldnt start it straight away and was led to believe it had ran out of petrol. started up after 10 minutes.

check if there is still fuel in the car, if the pump is playing up it will cut out and lead you to believe the car is running out of fuel, the reason why it could be quarter of a tank is because there is less fuel in the tank and crap in the tank is not dispursed so much and is drawn into the fuel pump, it stops your pump and it stops the fuel you get the impression it dies. when you leave it the muck that got stuck in the pump drops to the bottom of the tank again and the pump works again and the car starts.

honestly look into the tank have a good look around for rust or plastic propellers i had 6 of em sitting in the bottom of the tank.

a garage tested my pump and said it was fine, it was only until i looked into the tank i found a right mess and the pump had only two propellers left on it.

i uploaded a photo showing the bottom of the lift pump, you can see the little opening with the propellers.

it seems silly but it took me month to figure it out having gone through every section of the car.

the variable resistor can fail and stick as mentioned before.
