Post by: daniel-1986 on 11 November 2008, 22:13
i noticed my CV boot has a little slit (about 10mm long) in it by the hub when the wheel is turned, i bought a new boot for it but my mate said its a right faffle fitting it and said to use black silicone sealent to cover it. has anyone done this before

They are soo easy to do mate! just un-dew the hub bolt for the drive shaft and ball oint and move the hub out the way, then cut the old CV boot off! the with a copper hammer tap the end of the shaft off slide the new boot on, fill with grease and tap the end of the shaft back on and clip the boot on and fit back together! EASY :D

Easy if you can remove the outer joint without removing the shaft, however i've never actually managed this, so always taken the shaft of the car.
The reason why it doesn't like coming off in situ is the inner joint is a sliding joint, so takes all the shock when you try to bang the outer joint off.
