Title: Starter Motors
Post by: Dec on 10 November 2008, 22:00
My starter motor is on its way out (i think its that anyway) It turns over a few times then just makes a wierd electric type noise. After a few quick turns of the key it starts. The starter motor was a bit dodgy when I brought the car and had to clean it out then so i think its finally giving up.

My question is... Will an 8v GTI starter motor work on my 1.6 Driver?

My mates got one he said I can have cheap if it will!

Thanks,

Dec

Just a quick one... Have you tried cleaning all the electrical connections from battery to starter motor. You never know...

Try connecting it directly from the battery (touching the connector with a jump lead) to check the starter works OK. If it does the problem is elsewhere, maybe starter switch or dirty connections.

yes a GTI starter will work on your 1.6, any 020 gearbox one will, even MK3.  Though the MK3 ones I've seen have a different plug for the trigger wire, the MK2 spade seems to fit on it no bother or you could splice on the MK3 plug end :)

Cheers guys! Havent bothered testing it but a year ago when I brought the car it was a bit temperamental and I just "refurbed" it.

Picking up one from my mate tomorrow so will see how it goes!

Thanks,
