After my oil change yesterday my idle is a lot smoother.... much more power through the revs and generally quieter....
Last Oil change was 6k miles ago.....
Anyone know what interval to recommend??? maybe 3k miles??
its a mk2 16v engine btw

3K is what I do my oil changes at in the 16v. Mine is a bit tappity at the moment but when she warms up it goes?????????

been 5.5K since my last change and i plan on having a full lube change next week, Its starting to feel a little cranky

I know the sound of the fresh oil, just done mine at the weekend. it runs smooth(ish)
i swear mine hadnt been changed for half a century, it was thick as and so dark no light escapes it!!!
I rhink i'm gonna do mine bout every 5k or so, maybe more!

what grade oil you using? also its normal for vw engines to sound a little tapety when cold but should go quiet after a few seconds

I try and do mine every 3k, not sure of that's too much but reckon it will keep the engine sweet for longer.

I think they're hydraulic tappets on a 16v, so they will sound rough at start up till the engine's got the oil round it

make sure you use flusher when changing the old oil.
Quick question... Is fully synthetic oil thicker or thinner?

i use flusher sometimes but heard i can cause problems and a regular oil change is more preferable...

Synthetic can be thicker or thinner?? It depends on its viscosity. Its got two SAE numbers eg 20W/50. The higher the number the thicker. The number with the W is the winter/cold temp, and the other is hot (-20 and 99 degrees) In cold, you want it to be thin, so its not too thick to turn over etc, and thicker as its warm so theres no metal to metal contact. I think that the thickness only depends on the SAE number, not whether its synthetic or not. Does that answer your question, or did you already know that??!!
Incidentally, if your at all interested SAE stands for Society of Automotive Engineers.
I suppose i could add that throughout the cars life its had its oil changed every 7000 miles, and has no problems. Also if you want to stop the tappets then use the oil that "sticks" then it coats everything instead of draining into the sump.
