Title: How to use gear linkage gauge?
Post by: KKK on 31 May 2004, 22:37
Just bought a gear linkage guage, set it up in neutral, and now the gearbox is stroppy about going into first.

Just checking whether I've got this right - the VW tool holds the gear lever in neutral, then you slacken off then tighten up the gearshift rod clamp (with gearbox in neutral) and voila - perfect adjustment?

Someone reassure me, please...

Well, to answer my own post, ya need to preload the linkage against the play in the linkage (and there's still a little, even though all the bushes are newish).

I pushed the linkage lever in the direction of 1st gear, twisted the relay shaft the other way, to take up the play at the gauge, et voila, perfect adjustment.

Well worth sorting, makes those notchy synchros so much easier to live with.
