hi guys just got hold of 97 golf gti agg engine think its 8v? would i be lucky to have not hit the valves when belt went please advise also reverse gear gone, easy repair or another box, heard they were pron for this..
-
start counting the pennies this aint goin to be cheap.
-
your probably better off breaking the car for spares and buying another one cos its gonna cost you quite abit of money.
-
oh well only paid £100 car is in really good condition my mate £2400 less than 2 years ago..went at about 40 mph.so pistons would of hit valves then??
-
yes, i cant imagine it survivng at that speed.
-
If the car was only £100 then replace the engine, ive seen engines sell for £50-£100, still makes it a cheap car.
-
you can get an engine for an 8v AGG verrrrry cheap, say you spend up to £150 on engine, and fit it yourself, you have an 8v for £250 that will be worth a grand, PROFIT.
Although, if you cant fit the engine yourself, break the car (the bits sold on here and other forums + the scrap left over in metal) will make you £500 + making you £400 profit!!! Then just get another 8v..........
Either way mate, you will win! SCORE.....
:D :D :D :D :D

will try to go down that route but i live on isle of wight always a bugger to get bits just to get off island is £30 then getting an engine back ...ahhh
-
if box is gone aswell might aswell get complete engine n gearbox might be cheaper and easier.
-
Frankly I'd bop a new belt on there, time it up and see how it runs. £20 and half a day will be worth it to if it's still a goer.

could you not sell as much as you can, get all the parts together you're selling then drive it to the mainland to post?

worth a go,i had a mate who bought a car with a snapped cambelt for about £50,put a new belt on it and it ran perfectly, then he sold it for about £1000.
-
ye i think i will try a belt ..nothing to lose some say it may be ok others not ..then just a gearbox find.. like i said car is in lovely condition and has cost me next to nothing...will have a go soon .
-
CHeck the linkage for the box. Will it go in reverse or can you not find it on the stick?

Change the belt as Nick said, then do a compression test.
If the box is knackered, then buy a 2nd hand one off ebay.

Dunno if it's the same place you're thinking Bow, but I've used Stevens Volkswagen Dismantlers and they've usually been pretty helpful.

yep stevens are great

I've had this problem before, in my case two valves were bent so bought a replacement head from Stevens VW (Yes a good source of goodies and cheap postage too) gasket set / water pump (worth doing) and all was fine and dandy.
Spend about £100 and it should be a happy motor again - dead easy to do too.
-
I have a 97 engine, 8v only done 76k. complete but minus w/pump yours for £50
-
have you the gearbox?
-
Right now know why belt snapped ..some garage put tensioner pully on back to front useless sods..so it never ever spun!! god knows how they tensioned it .I hate garages ..nearly all useless..anyway my mate who has never serviced anything, but was serviced just as he bought it.2 years 7000 miles later belt rubbed through only about 3mm thick!!.Not bad really 2 years no spinning pully !!! lots of rubber dust and rusty pully apart from where it rubbed... :nerd:
