Bought a mk2 golf GTI 16v yesterday. 1987. not clued up on them.... hence me having this slight problem.
I cant shut the boot!
Opened it via the key, and now when i come to shut it- it doesnt shut and lock into place. Ive looked through the manual and it says the key should turn in the lock, but im unable to do this.
im most likely doing something wrong, but would appreciate the help asap!

Has the lock jammed? can you move the clip with your fingers at all?

Quick fix, oil the catch then slam it, mine does it all the time, just jams cos its old! :evil:

The lock moves. And i pushed it into the lock position. Thinking i would be able to open it with the keys from the outside lock. But now i cant even unlock it from the outside.
So now the lock is locked and the boot is open. totally confused.
I looked in the manual and it says the key should turn 180. horizontal being unlocked. but cant seem to turn it. i opened it by inserting key and pressing button in.

Managed to unlock it, but now back to sqaure one and cant shut it.
Am i correct the key should move in the lock?, (i-e from- vertically to horizontally?) if so-i cant do this, and the key lock is in the horizontal position.

You put the key in, turn it and the shaft (middle) of the lock turns 180. Then it opens.
Slam the boot and try it that way.

Sounds like the pins in the barrel are seized. scrappy trip for a new one methinks. Or a solenoid.

Yeah- thats the problem. cant rotate the key in the lock. and its on the latch and wont shut. :angry:

I suspect the striker pin on the bottom of the tailgate opening has moved and now the boot catch cannot engage on it properly by the sounds of it, loosen the bolts and move it further upwards and retry. There is also a rubber buffer in each corner of the tailgate, if these are wound out too far the boot wont be able to close enough to cathc the striker. If that doesnt sort it or the boot catch keeps sticking shut then you'll need to take it out of the tailgate and service it!
Pull the plastic trim off inside the boot, you'll see a metal rod linking the button to the boot catch. It sounds liek somehow this is sticking or the boot catch itself is jamming up internally? its easy to strip it all off, theres 2 big allen bolts holdign the catch to tailgate, so remove that 1st and unclip the rod from the inside of the catch. Now work the mechanism to see if its sticking, if the spring is good & strong and springs open nice when you release it all is well here, conventrate on the boot lock.
The lock pops out from behind, there are 2 clips that you release and it'll come out. If you have central locking its a bit mroe tricky as it has the massive long bar to the cl actuator, but if you unscrew the actuator from the boot you can release it from the rod. The rod will then come out, it'll take a bit of persuation and wiggling but it will come out in 1 piece!
Next check the lock mech, put the key in and spin it, you should see the lock mech spin and the metal mech on the rear of the lock moving round. If the key doesnt move it or is jammed remove the screw from the back and withdraw the lock barrel. Drown the lock barrel in penatrating oil til all the pins move freely, clean out the button hole it came out of and re-assemble.
Refit it all to the car and hopefully it should now work!

forgot to say, becarefull when the lock is removed as the pins will be free to fall out, or they should be if not stuck in with corrosion. kep the key in though and they cant go anywhere :)
if you want to strip it down completly remove the key and pop out each lock finger, making carefull note of the order they go in, otherwise you'll have lots of fun gettin em back in the same order :grin:
Each finger has 2 springs, so pull those all out too and dont loose any! If you do manage to you'll need to find some more locks from de scrappy and pillage em for spares!
Once out give em all a good clean and test fit till they slide in and out smoothly. Also if you stretch the springs a tiny bit this will bring new life into worn ones. Put everything back in as you took em apart and refit key to cylinder, you should note that all fingers are flush with the barrel, if not your key is worn, its the wrong key or you messed up the order of the fingers. Refit the lock barrel to the button and check it spins freely, if not pull the lock out again and recheck.
If you cant get spares or your key is too worn, you can file down the lock fingers till smooth, but if you have a spare ket this means it might not work in the lock! Ideally you want to get a shiny fresh key cut rather than lock finger filing. This also works if you strip another lock for spares and you cannot find the exact size finger you need for your key! I retumbled a MK2 glovebox lock for my MK1 cabby main key this way, I got most of the fingers I needed but some needed a bit of filing for smooth operation :)

while your at it...
on the two corners of the boot door you have two rubber stoppers.
Wind them all the way in and see if the boot closes.
Had a similar problem once mine came back from sprayers. Adjusted and then it closed.
