Hi Guys
Newbie here ;D
I currently own a Punto GT which is soon getting booted and I need to get myself a MK2 Gti
I have been after one for ages
Could someone tell me the main differences between the 8v and 16v GTi, power - handling. Servicing costs, difference in trim etc etc etc
Just want to make sure I buy the right one 8)
Thanks
Dale

alrite mate, welcome to the forum ;D
a couple of topics back there was the mother of all topics 8v vs 16v.
read that, cos it will tell you everything you want to know about the diffrences and more! :D :D :D

here is the thread

If you go Punto GT to GTI - make sure its 16v. Much as the 8v is a really good car (apparently) you will take a performance hit.
-
::)
kinda true, i did goin from a coupe turbo to an 8valve.
they are still good cars tho :D

what do you mean apparently? they are good cars just not as quick as a 16v, do you want start a new thread see if we can hit 100 pages? :P
although my 8v is quicker than vedubgti16v's 16v :P
-
thanks for the reply guys
I have read about 10 pages of that topic and its all the same kind of stuff, Im looking for 8v-16v 0-60, Horse power difference and any difference in trim
im thinking the 16v will be the best for me as Im coming from a 1.4 GT 140bhp light as hell and would beat most stock Mk2 Golf's
Also I must have lecy windows, I hate handles ;)
Also how much will I have to pay for a Mk2 fairly standard in good condition?
Im selling my GT for 3k and dont wanna spend all that on a Golf
Thanks

yeah love it while you can ;D :P
-
i will dont worry! :P
-
hi mate mosts golf gti 16v come with e/ windows. i bought a oak green 16v h reg for ?1300 it has done 144000 miles but it is clean and very quick ;D
there is some good ones out there :)
-
Should I be worried when buying a Gti with 140k+ ?
Should I look for a rebuild? or proof of some major engine work?
Cheers
Also is the 16v as reliable as 8v? In most cases cars are not
-
Dale,
As with any car look for the lowest milage example you can find for the best price. Yes, Golf's can take the milage very well, but there's plenty of 70 - 90k cars going; so be patient. I got a silver 3 door 'digi' GTi with 70k for a little as ?800 - she was mint and not being sold by an enthuiast, so got a bargin!
8 valves generally are easier to maintain and last a bit longer, although on paper have quite a bit less power. As the 8v has to be revved less to get the best from it they'll take the miles better too (how many 16v have valve stem oil seal problems compared to 8v's??), but if it's the power figure that means the most to you then choose a 16 valve without a doubt.
On the other hand, get a good 8 valve with air box mods and a chip and you'll easily keep up as many of us in here can vouch for, or kick some 16v ass ;D
Both are cracking cars and if your not really fussed about the figures, forget the whole 8v vs 16v and buy the best example car you can as 'mint' cars will only ever go up in price for the next few years - then on to proper 'classic' status!
Hope this helps and if you've got any more specific questions feel free to ask ....
-
Thanks David
With that in mind I may get the 8v then as Im fed up of having hassle with cars.
My Punto has been away so many times getting stupidly small things geting repaired.
I want something with build quality and that can last the test of time 9and is also a classic)
I will prob keep an eye out for a minted one and not rush in. Have to sell my GT first anyways :-\
-
8v are only marginally easier to maintain.
There is no evidence whatsoever to suggest that an 8v will last longer than a 16v.
I have owned and know of other examples of VAG multi valve engines that just keep going ;) :D
-
6 is right most vag engines are bullet proof if you maintain them properly and dont fit parts from gfs

LOL :D
I had my dad's Audi over the weekend, its a 5 cylinder 20v, ineffect like a gti 16v with an extra cylinder.
It is a G reg (1990) , has 110k on the clock, and goes like stink!
170 bhp ;)
-
thru 4 wheels! 8)
-
i gotta change that
not goes like stink
it goes like f**king stink :D
-
::)
what quicker than the vr6? :P
-
The 20v Audi engine is not far off the vr6 ;)
It will certainly piss all over any of you 8v owners :D
-
The 20v engine is very much like the 16v engine, not a lot up to 4000 rpm, then when it goes.....
Vr6 has a better spread of torque.

just jacked the thread 8)
-
this thread has been well and truely jacked, :D
sorry dale :-*
either are very good cars,
ive owned both now,
8valve was very competant but if your coming from a punto gt then you got to go for the 16valver as you wont suffer as much of a performance hit. :)
they are both very relaible cars as well, sooooooooo much more relaible than your punto gt!
have you got tuning in mind?
8valves are easier to tuine but you will get good results from both when tuned.
by boring out both you could easily achieve 190+bhp for the 16valve and about 160bhp from the 8valver.
a 190bhp 16valver would be pushing 0-60 in 5.5 seconds :o
i kno as the guy from c and r in nottingham has got a 16valver that he has bored out to 2.2 litres, its fookin amazing mate :D
gr8 cars mate,
whats your budget? ???
-
i see some true colours coming out :D
'6 was it a red audi? did you shout at me at traffic lights? couldnt see thru the reflection of rear windscreen ;D
Yeah that was me ;)
-
also, you'll notice that in the Gti you'll be able to go round corners at proper speeds instead of tootling round in the punto
-
yeh the handling on gti's is second to none! :)
-
my budget is a max of 2.5k. Im not sure if i wanna modify another car as I have modified every car I have ever owned. In my youth I spent 15k on a 1.1 Punto. Max power style ::)
Wouldnt do it again
All I want is a nice low GTi with 17'' BBS and a magnex zaust
I may tune the engine but I dont want to tune it and for it to effect the reliability of the car
-
::)
15k on a 1.1punto? :o :o :o :o :o :o
what the f**k were you thinking man? :-\
thank f**k you have sorted yourself out now :P
-
well for 2.5k you can pick up a clean late 16v for about 1.5k if you look hard enough (dont just jump at the 1st one you see)
as for wheels, 17's will need arch rolling done
and stay away from Magnex where golf's are concerned. Magnex recirculate the gases in order to quieten down the system and therefore the system is more restrictive than the OE item (there is a post of mine on here where i have email correspondance from magnex confirming this)
-
lucky boy!
very nice to have a budget of 2.5k. ;)
for that money you need to be looking at MINT G,H and j reg 16valvers.
www.mateymatey.co.uk,
this in my opnion is the best buyers guide for mk2 gti's.
personally id spend 1.5k on the car and then spend a further 1k modifying it.
17s may ruin the handling as well?
im a bit biased any way i love bbs alloys.
have you seen the bbs alloys on gavg60's ride?
f**kin awesome :D
-
na I havnt seen anyones cars on this forum.
Yeah I have 2.5k but dont wanna spend it all. Gonna take my time and get the right car for me 8)
I thought 17's might have went straight onto a golf?
Guess I will just stick with 16's then and slam it. Love low looking Golf's
Didnt know that about the magnex exhaust, that it was more restrictive. Guess I will have a shop around to see what other system there is.
Im not sure if I wanna spend loads modifyin the car as I like my Golf's quite standard ;)
-
17's are all show no go
if you want performance stick to 15"
-
yea
-
yea 15 bbs look the muts nutts on the mk 2 golfs. good luck in gettin a golf mate and keep us posted on it.
