Hi
Just got a mk3 1997 GTi and noticed when i lock the drivers door I can hear a whinning noise like a motor running coming from the drivers door and also sounds like another coming from the back somewhere around the rear drivers side lights. It lasts for about 30 seconds then goes off, it also happens when I unlock the car.
Any ideas what it is (probably central locking motor) and why it's doing it?

Possible air leak in hoses or faulty central locking pump.
I have had this for more than a year now - never got round to fixing it

Yeah but do you know what it is and why it's doing it

mine does this, its air leaking from a pipe that you can see if you remove the door card, right by where the lock is,it stops on mine if you cover it with your finger,so id say its definately a leak, been doing it ever since i bought the car, dont think its anything to worry about.probably an easy fix too.

Took door panel off today and where the vacuum pipe joins the central locking unit in the drivers door it was sort of coming away, it sort of all clicks together, hard to explain but just pushed the bit that had un-clicked back onto the central locking unit and all sorted, central locking lovely now, very easy to sort

Had this problem couple of times, just roll back the rubber which is in between the door and body and check the hoses that run along with the wires, wherever there's a split, just repair. Its good to sort it and not leave it for too long as it will deteriorate, and eventually, something will stop locking. Also I have heard that "performance" rubber hoses are available as direct replacements which do not fail. Where to get them, I don't know.
