Title: Running problems
Post by: oakgreengolf on 04 November 2008, 18:25
Ok where to begin. my car began running rough a few weeks back. I also changed the dash a couple of days ago for a better one. Since doing this the car is running really rough barely starting and hunting badly on idle. Done all the normal checks isv, vac leaks etc. Could i have disturbed something whilst the dash was out if so any ideas what??. There is also a grating noise comming occasionally when you rev the engine from the dizzy. I did have this off prior to removing the dash so again not sure if ive done anything here. Any help greatly appreciated

Maybe you missed out an earth point when putting the dash back together? Think that would affect the dash more though.

Did you forget to fit the vacuum hose to the back of the clocks?

Still having major running problems. Starting still a nightmare. Foot on accelerator when first started and it hardley revs. exhaust also is popping occasionally. Revs plumet when you try to pull away. not to bad when warm but not brilliant. Ive noticed the saucer shape thing on the air box hasnt got 12v going to it. Should it be pushing air out?? could this explain my problems?? Car runs on lpg too and this is not running any good either. I'm running out of ideas now

well if its running crap on petrol and gas    that shouts ignition   lift the bonnet withthe engine runnign at night  and look for sparks, check int he dizzy cap for oil ect

saucer thing only gets 12v with thottle open, its resposible for firing the 5th injector briefly when you put load on engine i.e. boot it.  but the 5th inj only gets an earth path when cold.  Perhaps the loom is shorting out for this, pull the plug on the 5th injector see if it improves.  I had mine unplugged for a week and it made no difference to how mine ran fregardless of stone cold or boiling hot!

edit: also if you have a spray bottle put a light misting of water over the ign components, check it at night like danny says, look for arcing.

ok just had a look no arcing also pulled 5th injector out no change. plenty of exhaust popping still   didnt have a spray bottle though

hmm id go with dannys assessment of ign prob, try pulling a spark plug lead 1 by one.  if you find one of the leads makes no differnce to how engine runs then you found a cylinder that aint firing!

tryed this one just dies when you remove them. There is a fair bit of oil under the dizzy would this be effecting it. Seal perhaps??, Also the plug that goes onto the dizy, the wiring is a bit frayed. I gave it a wiggle with the engine running and made no difference. this will need sorting but i dont think its causing my problems. I'm going to gscps tomorrow, new plugs and rotar arm. maybe this will help.

oil inside dizzy is sign the internal dizzy seal is shafted, i replaced the seal on mine yesterday as it happens!  reasonably easy job once you get the lock pin out, which is a right sod its in there tight!  I haven't actually tried putting the pin back in yet so we'll see how that goes!

Clean your dizzy out with WD40 (let it dry a bit before starting it up though) and see if that makes a difference before buying the new seal. Pay particular attention to the Hall Sender. Also, carefully pull the rubber back from the hall sender connector and give it a check.

Couple of suggestions if that doesnt help...

1) When my exhaust was popping it was due to faulty leads, so I would check ignition system as per Danny_P.

2) Once when my timing was out it would hardly rev etc, and pinking occurred, which could be the grating noise your hearing, but I doubt it. Worth a check though.

3) Trouble starting was cured by re-checking all the vac connections and finding one had popped off.

ok just been and brought new spark plugs, tryed a new coil, dizzy and arm, checked hall sender lead one was slightly frayed. sorted that still no change. Will try wd4o suggestion. I think i may have upset something when i took the dash out though. What i don't know. I really don't want to have to take it out again. Realy pis*ing me off now!!!. Midland vw is about 30 min from me might have to take it there at this rate

It'll be a vac hose more than likely, i did the head gasket on my digi and it was running rough and felt like it was gonna stall all the while, checked timing numerous times and eventually found it was a vacuum hose, there are a few of them so check inside and outside the engine bay.

wd40 hasn't worked no difference at all.  Have taken clocks out, checked all vacume hoses wires etc. its been suggested it could be an earth problem?. Are there any earthing points on the dash I could have missed off. Its idling at 500rpm was 950 before dash removal it then struggles upto 2000 then is okish past then but not right. Ive got it booked in at midland vw monday if all else fails

Have you checked (rubjonnys suggestion) the ISV controller behind the centre console ??
