You need to do a little more fault diagnoses first before you start digging out the spanners.
If the head gasket has gone, then a number of things will be apparent. You could lose compression between two cylinders. This will give you an uneven cranking note and lack of power with possibly back firing through the induction system, dependant on which cylinders are affected. You could get crankcase compression caused by gasket failure between cylinder and oilway. You will notice that the oil will be very black, (only noticeable if you regularly change the oil) and the engine will not idle nicely and emmission will be abnormal. You will also have a very black and oily spark plug at the offending cylinder, perhaps causing a misfire. You could have oil mixing with water due to failure of the gasket between oil and water galleries. You will end up will loads of mayo under the oil filler cap, the breather will also be full of it and you will get oil in the header tank and possibly condensation on the dipstick. The same symptoms will appear if your oil cooler has perforated too.
Keep an eye on your oil temp and water temp. But to be honest, for cars of this age, its quite normal for water discolouration, especially at this time of year.
You could try a rad flush then refill with fresh antifreeze.
