Title: Chrome Tailpipes?
Post by: cupraowner on 31 October 2008, 22:41

Sorry, me again. I've noticed in the pictures section, allot of you have chrome tailpipes on yer GTI's - but my 2005 (55) Golf has dark tailpipes. Is there an explanation to this?

Autosol or any chrome/metal cleaner. Use wirewool if it's really bad, then a soft cloth/MF to get a shiney finish

RedRobin's indoctrination is definitely working...

....

You'll still have to clean Milltek tips (unless you have Black Satin like mine :smug:) but they are easier to maintain. BUT....the Milltek is a performance exhaust and costs accordingly and needs to work best with a remap.

Slippery slope indoctrination coming up..................(http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b308/RedRobin_05/JesusSaysModify.jpg)

Autosol and an old sports sock inside-out over your hand, works a treat and you can fit your hand between the bumper and the pipes without shreading your knuckles!

Might need a good soak first to soften it up

I find that a strip of cloth about 2" x 9" works for me. I use it in a sawing action with plenty Autosol

I use heavy duty degreaser. Spray it on, leave for a good 5-10 mins. Worked in using a cheap alloy brush. Wipe off and repeat 2-3 times or as many times until you get some silver coloured pipes looking at you. Spray inside the exhaust too (just the very outermost bit that you can see), leave to work and scrub with the alloy brush. Do this a few times but don't wipe away the excess. Turn on the ignition and rev the engine mildly (2000rpm) for about a minute. All the crap will come flying out. Wipe clean with some WD-40.

Then use wirewool and scrub some more. Good 10 - 15 mins continuous. On the last run, use Autosol Metal Polish with the wirewool

Then use a clean scouring pad (the kind you use for washing up, typically yellow sponge with green rough layer on one side) and use the green bit to clean.

Finally buff off with microfibre cloths.

This is what I did and it came up a treat. Microfibre cloths and sponge can be bought from Tescos. Degreaser/WD40/wirewool/autosol can all be bought from halfrauds.

I went to pipewerx and got them to chop of the old tail pipes and fit 3" chrome pipes, look just like milltek pipes, and to keep them clean just give them a good wipe with wd40 every week and they look like new, and it only cost me £80 to do, so if you don't want to spend a fortune on a milltek then this is your answer, i'll post up a pic in the morn when i'm a little bit more sober.

I know, thats how silly it was - I then proceeded to go directly for Stage2 - it would be rude not too!

Cash was burning a hole in my pocket at the time, a week later I'd spent over £1500.

Heard alot of people saying this, what is the difference between the Milltek and standard exhaust?  Is it worth the extra cost??

It sounds better, looks better, more deep, and more sporty sounding. Gives the car a less "restrictive feel" and may increase the torque output, full

system will give you a big 4 figure bank

balance deletion , or go cat back system for around £440 from milltek for either a Non res, or resonated system, will look nice do all the

above except give you a BHP  increase which the down pipe would give you.(On my most wanted list)
Title: Re: Chrome Tailpipes?

4 figures   £880 full system

Yikes!  £1100?!   How much does the regular exhaust cost?  Mine should be good for a while yet, but when it's time to replace it I might have to look at the more expensive option

I thought they were a different bore size 2.75 for GTi and 3" for edition 30. If you fit a 2.75 it will fit but will need to be modified.

Happy days if full system is now cheaper, wonder if cat back has been reduced aswell.

Maybe im getting confused with the APR version. That is more expensive

I meant I though the cost was the same - I know the Ed30 version is bigger.

I thought both fit ok, dont remember Ben or Luca mentioning any problems using the slightly smaller downpipe.

Bigger is not always better

What it is neg, i know that exhaust of bens was on my car before, but the previous keeper of mine had it modified so it couple'd from his old

Burned out GTi ^^^^^ http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=54105.msg420470#msg420470,

and he then had it Modified to fit My ed30, hense why it now fits an ed30.

Lets hope lighting doesnt strike twice Ben!

Hey Neg, £880 for full system, that is a good price! I have rung them before as I know they advertise on ebay, only thing is you then have to find somewhere to get it fitted. Did they recomend someone local to them?
Title: Re: Chrome Tailpipes?
Post by: neg on 03 November 2008, 21:36
Got it fitted in Ilkeston, Sportstech - £70 I think it was.
