Have asked this before so sorry, my 1996 GTI had 205/50/15 on it when I got it, going to be running 15"s again for the winter, so need a bit of info before buying 4 new tyres in the morning, should I stick to 205's or could I switch to 195's, checked the petrol flap tonight and it lists both sizes.
Does anyone know 100% what was fitted new on a 1996 anyone got a brochure maybe.

i have fitted 195 rubber to my 205 rims on the back, simply because i had to due to rubbing issues. its fine and has caused no problems..
its when you stretch the tyre to the extent the euro boys go is when i consider it dangerous.
but to answer your question.. it depends what rims you have..
if they are standard gti rims then i think they are 195..
if they are the additional option ones like i have then they are 205`s..

on your year it would have had 205/50's......but due to rubbage i have fitted 195/50 and it rarely scrapes now

i run standard size on 205 tyres and find them a better for grip compared to 195 also my tyres are sightly cheaper in 205 form than 195.
