My 1990 Mk2 GTI ran amazingly well when I first got it in Feb. A couple of months ago it lost the kick it had at about 3k tho still flew at over 4k and it has now become very difficult to start, is a pain for about 5 minutes when driving from cold and is still crap below 4k even when warm. It is a b!tch to rev at low revs and the MPG is god awful!!
Ive looked for holes in pipes around the throttle body and all I found was a penny sized hole in the lower pipe connecting to the rear of the air filter and this pipe was also loose. I done a quick repair and tightened but this hasn't seemed to make it any better, could this cause probs?
The idle screw makes no difference to the idle (which is about 7k so quite rough) whether its fully in or fully out?!
The blue temp sensor is ok, as is the full throttle switch and Im wondering if anyone can give me any ideas what else to check. Im so skint so needs to be an easy repair or Im going to have to sell the GTI and get a cheap daily :-(
I cant imagine it will be an expensive fix, just want to eleiminate what I can and see if I can repair it!
Any help would be so great and hopefully I can keep the GTI as I love it a little too much!!!

i had a bit of a problem with my 8v last week and it turned out to be the Airflow meter

If it's 8v have you checked that flying saucer type thing on the top of the head? Can't remember the name of it or what it does but it's common for the rubber gasket under it to split and that will make the car run like sh1t in low revs and during start up. Worth checking as it cost about £5 to replace and 5 secs to fix. :smiley:

Mines a 16v engine and when its cold, say from 4 degrees or lower it is not as usual until its been warmed up a bit, imagine this would just be common on these cars wouldnt it?? :shocked:

Cant find a picture of it but it's called a crankcase ventilation regulator valve. Big name, small part. Sits on top of your crankcase and if the rubber washer underneath it splits it will cause the engine to run lumpy and cut out etc. :smiley:

blimey idling at 7000rpm! better sort it soon before engine blows up :grin:
reason just fiddling wi idle screw effects nothing is becasue the ecu is compensating for the change, you need to put it into setup mode before fiddlin with the screw does owt. That being said 700rpm is pretty damn low for a digifant! Have a read thru me digi faq, see if a quick tuneup helps.

Well tried a new MFA and no difference at all so decided to sell the beast, thanks for all your help.
Oh, and just arrived at my parents to use PC and as I pulled up it a split a water hose so ive now gotta try and source one of them and find a way to get home, just love it.

If anyone fancies a the GTI its in the for sale section, I dont think it needs much!!

is this by using the MFA button's and reving the car 3 times with the blue sensor unplugged ??

revving the engine with sensor unplugged yes, the mfa trick doesnt do anything but show the digital rev counter to make setup easier ;)
