OK just in the middle of changing the windscreen, was expecting alot more rust than i found. Have seen alot worse anyway

I havn't got access to a welder to fabricate a plate so was thinking of sanding (second pic) it back to bare metal and then treating it with something as its not to deep. Not too sure how to tackle the top pic.
Obviously don't want it getting any worse.
Secondly when i put the screen back in does the rubber need anything applying to it. Or would have been put in dry from the factory
Can anyone reccomend what to do cheers

For the corrosion, I would treat it as best you can, then leave well alone. The car has survived for upwards of twenty years, and to be honest, unless its a minter, its not got another twenty years left in it. Mine has absolutely no rust whatsoever, but I am not expecting it to last much more than another 7, or maybe 10 years.
As for refitting the screen, use silicon grease, as used for plumbing, or vaseline. These will not cause anymore corrosion...even protect it to an extent. Do not use washing up liquid. It kills cars.

what about painting the bare metal with hamerite will that do?

no reason why it shouldnt last another 20 years if its in a condition like yours, or if its been completly rebuild and i mean completly.

Hammerite is crap, try POR15 its in a different league to Hammerite

Ok hamerite is a no no then. Can i get this stuff at my local car factors, halfroads etc. I will need to use the car in a couple of days time so can't be waiting too long . If not any other suggestions of what to use.

I've only seen it for sale at Frosts. Unless you can totally get rid of the rust then use Hammerite, otherwise it'll come through again in no time at all.

get on yell .com and see if you have any automotive paint suppliers near you and see if they have that stuff if not see what else they can suggest but if that stuff does what it says it could be worth the wait especially the metal ready

Never tried myself, but some people swear by Krust rust treatment. I saw it in B&Q too.

When I have fitted windows in the past I found that Waxoil is good because it does not react with the rubber and helps keep rot at bay. Alternatively KY jelly  is good as it is water based and evaporates quite soon after installation.
