Hi all.
My current Pioneer headunit has just about had it. The volume knob keeps coming off and the buttons are all feel quite tired to press.
I have standard Golf Mk4 speakers and no sub in the back.
What does everyone recommend? I was looking at an Alpine head unit.
Cheers.
Alex.

You can't really go wrong with Alpine to be honest, looks good value.
-
Spend the little bit extra and get this Alpine one:

Comes with an iPod cable so you can play music straight from an iPod the same way you'd select it from a CD etc, except with text, I highly recommend Alpine iPod HUs, got a 9880R which is a green one for my Mk3.

Cheers for the link. Is that the sort you take the cable to the glovebox and leave the iPod in there?

how about this one

Yes mate, simple as to do. good thing with that HU is it comes with the cable which is usually around £20. Makes such a difference having an iPod for your jukebox in the car, and real easy and quick to use.

mmmmmmm, ebay...........
.......cheaper! find the headunit you want on car audio sites, then ebay for it. I picked up mine really cheap off ebay!
ipod control through headunit is overrated btw. you wont want to use the headunit to search for songs/albums, as it takes forever and is a pain. i just setup a few playlists, and set them on shuffle. Then i only have to search through a few playlists rather than loads of albums.
ohh and the better alpine headunits, i.e. the ones that have more features and give better sound quality, are the ones that start with CDA - ....... checkout the alpine website for the latest headunits too.

LL I have to disagree with you there, the iPod control on an Alpine HU is piss easy. For a start the scrolling through is hell of a quick, secondly, you can set playlists within the iPod and have those play through on iPod control but also the 6 preset buttons at the bottom act as bookmarks, so if you goto artists and want an artist beginning with W (Will Smith), you'd press the 5 or 6 button preset and it takes you to a set letter nearer the end of the artists list.
Chaching!!
LOL!

whatever you do...just buy a Alpine deck!

Sorry to hijack, Alex, but would this be any good? >>> http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/alpine-idax200-p-6505.html

they are good, but they are totally for ipod i think, no cd player.
As for ipod control on headunits, maybe im just crap at using it or maybe i got crappy ipod control or maybe it is easy, but i just cba with doing it anyway!

Just to rejuvenate this topic slightly!
I'm after an Alpine head unit now that comes with a cable supplied so I can plug my iPod Nano in and hide it in the glovebox.
Any recommendations?

Two things,
What iPod nano is it? The newest one?
And secondly, it's not really a problem if the HU comes with it or not because you can buy it for £15 most probably from wherever you buy the HU, so they come together.
I do highly recommend the 9880R, and then buy the cable on top of that you're looking at £140-150, well worth the money for the spec it's got.
-
I've only got standard Mk4 speakers mind you so would I benefit from an even better HU?
It's a 4GB Nano, older spec (I think). How can I tell?
-
Well that's fine, if it's a 4GB one it's not gonna be one of the newest ones, reason being (refer to this thread):
http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=97895.0
If you're only using standard speakers it doesn't really make all that much difference on power output, but by getting something decent, you'll leave yourself open in the future for improvements using the same HU.
Here's the iPod cable:

Here's a good HU:

It'll match the colours of the dash from the Mk4 :)
-
Look for a bargain off ebay or elsewhere.......

As LL said bargains can be found but that's alot of HU for the money which I linked to. Trust me, I'm more than happy to have spent the £150 odd on the HU and iPod cable, bargains in my opinion.
-
Looking at the spec that iPod cable isn't suitable for the HU you sent me the link for.

Yeah, sorry just realised you don't even need to buy the cable, it's included with that HU, even better ;)
-
One more quick question about this one!
http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/alpine-cde9882ri-p-6423.html
With the engine off, and the HU off, will the iPod still be draining the battery (charging) or will that also be turned off?
Cheers.
-
Right, so long as you don't have a 4th Gen nano (the new ones) that won't charge when plugged in, literally all other iPods do charge, but as for when it's turned off, you either have to change the source on the HU (like to radio, CD or something) other than iPod to pause it (which will then turn itself off after a minute, or pause the iPod from the HU before you turn the HU off to do the same, if you turn the HU off with the iPod playing, the iPod will continue to play without being charged by the HU.
However if you're a lazy bugger like me, you can request for free a lead that connects between the HU and iPod cable that turns it off without doing any of the above lol!
Hope this helps.
