Hi All
Anyone had this issue. The larger of the 2 radiator fans, keeps running at full speed either at start up, during normal running, or after engine switch off, the engine temperature does not seem to come into play, it can be cold, 1/4, or normal temp from dash clock. The fan can run for as little as 30 secs to some minutes.
The dealer claims this is normal operation when the climate control is active.
I keep the climate on continously, and it has only just started happening, so either the car as always been faulty and has just rectified itself or they are talking pants as usual.
I am now going to run car without aircon on and see if it keeps happening.
Any thoughts appreciated

If you turn off the aircon unit (and the engine is cold) then no fans should run, turn on the aircon and the fans run at slow speed (hardly hear them). Could it be a similar problem to what the mk4's suffer from when the resister fails ....
what year car?

I had the exact same problem on mine few months ago, the larger fan was making a noise at low speeds and high speeds and also it carried on going for a few seconds after i turned ignition off, took it to the stealers they confirmed the small fan was not working so large fan was running constantly to make up for it, swapped both under warranty no probs since, hope that helps,

My fans run for a while after the ignition is off...is this not normal?
where is the small fan and is it possible to check if its not working?
I am out of warranty just, D' Oh!

Are you sure it's the fan and not the pump used to circulate fluid to cool the turbo?

had both fans replaced under warranty on my first GTi for this problem, the big fan would run all the time

Thanks guys for the replies, yes it is the big fan and it runs flat out for short periods even when cold, and its that which makes me believe it is possibly a sensor fault

you'll notice if there is a problem unless you have cloth ears as it sounds like a jet engine when the large fan is running at full speed when your sat in traffic  if it does then take it in and get it sorted as it should not be that loud. a 5 min drive with the mechanic at vw and as soon as the fan started up with the noise he knew exactly what it was and swapped both, seems to be quite common prob

have you been for your 40 thou service yet OP?
my fan used to run alot and pretty noisily, had a software update as part of the service, free as it was a recall, fan dont run hardly as much and is a lot quieter now too.
might be worth ringing a main dealer to see if your car needs this update, and then book it in, cant hurt to try.
