Hi all,
When I put the golf in 5th there is just a metallic, rattling noise and doesnt actually engage, drives fine in all other gears, any ideas??
Cheers

Check the oil level of the box although it may already be too late its worth a look !

If it is just fifth, then it sound as if the sprockets have gone AWOL. This does not mean you need to throw the box away though. With a little time and patience you can replace the fifth gear without removing the gearbox, and if you like, even change the ratio for better MPG on a run.
There is an internet site that explains how to do it. You can practice removing the fifth gear on the car in the scrapyard you remove it from, then put your new found skills to the test on yours.
Also, don't forget to change the gearbox oil as it may be full of iron filings.

check the linkage faq 1st, might be your linakge is stopping you from selecting gears properly. www.brokevw.com explains the 5th gear swap, but if 5th has been damaged bits of it will probably be in the oil which isnt good for the rest of the box :(

Cheers guys, will have a look soon, and hopefully will have her back in 5th soon, cheers!

quitre often if 5th gears died due to oil starvation if your lucky it's just the gear but sometimes the shaft looses it's temper and becomes soft as well. if discoulraton die to heat is present best not to reuse
