Title: Foot down no power
Post by: skimmer100 on 28 May 2004, 11:41
Hi

I've got a golf GTI and it basically hesitates when I accelerate away and either pulls away cleanly or drops power and chugs along.  This can happen all through the gears and is not just confined to pulling away.  I've changed the sparks and air filter still the same problem.  It starts fine, and idles fine  - any ideas

Cheers

Could be the Dizzy cap, happened to me once, had a crack in it...  also try the fuel pipes, maybe clogged with rust from teh fuel tank, always a fave to stop you car going too fast...  Good luck mate, I know how frustrating it can be and if it wasnt for these guys on this website I would probably still be frustrated  ;D

get it to a dealer/specialist/anyone with vagcom & a laptop and check for fault codes. sounds like a MAF sensor problem to me. If it is the MAF ask the dealership for a refurb'd one and trade in yours, costs about 30% of the new price that way.

If yours is a turbo model there is no dizzy cap but your coilpacks might be on their way out, not a problem if you're still under warranty. VW may even replace them free if you argue long enough (it's a very common fault, a recall took place in the U.S to solve this problem)

All very well if its a MK3 of MK4 but a lappy aint gonna do sh!t to a mk1 of mk2...  Who wants to rely on computers to drive your car for you...  Not me  :D

?250 ish new but like i said they just started doing a refurb deal, and still has full warranty. Think those will set you back about 75 notes.

Skimmer, I got hte same problem,

One minute its fine then next its running like a clapped out prostitue.

Getting a replacement MAF tomorrow from Lookers VW, Teesside.  ?247.14 plus VAT.

When asked about recon MAF, they said they didn't do them??

Ask teesside VW about an exchange deal, but new nothing of the sort.

reading that link I would say I've been ripped.  dodgy bar-stuwards.

Anyway, on the bright side, new MAF is fitted and shes running sweet as a nut.
