golf gti 97 8v. i had the problem with the engine cutting out when driving and car would not start for 2 or 3 mins had coil replaced which seemed to solve cutting out.now revs drop below 900 when braking or stopping when i dip clutch i have changed relay 30 and it does not cut out but revs still drop off dramatically. please help
-
u mean 900rpm?
-
how much below 900rpm do they actually fall?
-
revs drop below 900rpm
sometimes it manages to save itself and keep ticking over other times the revs drop so far that the engine stalls
-
toonarmy, surely you mean it drops below 900 rpm, does this happen when the car is cold? try cleaning your fuel regulator, sometimes its covered in crap (build up over years). Try and leave it standing in some standard tinners overnite, this should help.

clean throttle body out too

I would struggle to get my 8v up to 9000rpm before it went bang!! ;D
Seriously though....clean out the throttle body as Overseer said as I (and many other) have done this and it cures the problem. I used ecotek powerboost and it worked a treat www.ecotekplc.com

just beenout for a drive in my 95 mk3 16valver, stopped at a set of lights and it was idling at a tadge over 800rpm!!!!
-
i was using 900 rpm as a rough guide my rev counter drops way down and then jumps back up unless the car stalls first ???
-
My 97 8v used to do this, could never figure out why. It was only after reversing quickly however, whether the jolt was starving the engine of fuel or not i don't know - only thing I can think of anyway. In fact I'm pretty sure it still does, shame it's in a body shop waiting for Tescos Insurance to decide it's fate. Warning - patches of diesel on the entrance to corners are very very bad. They make the back end of your car do very bad things :/
Still if it's written off it means I can replace it with a 16v!

Hello. I couldnt help but notice this problem. I am getting real close to buying myself a 97 golf GTi 16v so was looking around.
On my honda prelude I had a very similar problem a little while ago. My idle would be low and then it as I was braking and diving on the clutch the car would stall. And also happened while slowing for lights etc.
In the end the PCV had to be replaced and this fixed everything. Positive crankcase ventilation valve or sensor I think its called.
I'm not sure if the gti has one of these as my honda is older.
anyway.
