Title: Help about exhaust system 16V
Post by: ager on 28 October 2008, 13:36
Hello from spain !

First excuse me for my bad english, is just the school level. The golf's forums in spain are really bad, there only have 10 users or less.
I'm reparing and getting ready one golf gti 1.8 16V for competition and i need some help.

The exhaust system have a 2 (8,12) silences and 2 firewalls (4,8) or the 2 firewalls are silencers too ? I want remove al the exhaust line and mount a free line, without silencers and firewalls, remaining only the last silencer (12). What is the best way to do it?, how i can remove the number 4? it have the last track of the colectors. Any shop sell this part empty inside or a sustitucion for competition? At the moment i don't want to change the collectors.

What is the best realtion in price/quality, steel or inox steel?

Regards !

When you say collectors, do you mean the manifold (3)? If so, then you could use a g60 downpipe (to replace 4) but you would then need a de-cat pipe, unless you get a custome exhaust made up.

If you don't go custom, Supersprint sell straight-through sections to replace the catalytic convereter (if you use a g60 downpipe), front silencer and centre silencer (8 ) and allow you to retain a standard back box

i hear 2.5" is the best size to go for on the 16v's

Yes i want say manifold, sorry. I got to search more information about the downpipe of G60, very thanks !

Yes, i will buy the replaces of silencers on supersprint, but is strange that nothing shop sell a replace for the (4) for a 1.8 16V. Mi golf don't use the cat, is the 139cv version.

Thanks !

You can use an 8v downpipe to replace no. 4, but it's a smaller bore than the 16v item.

Magnex (i think) systems come with a replacement downpipe, but i don't think you can get a straight through magnex system. Might be worth looking into though

Here are the two straight-through sections you require for the two middle silencers at a good price, not sure how much the postage to spain would be though:

Wow it's a very good price, but the shipment is very expensive... In spain all that you can find in ebay searching "golf gti 16v" is it: http://shop.ebay.es/?_from=R40&fts=2&_trksid=m38&_nkw=golf+gti+16v&_sacat=See-All-Categories

The two replaces for the intermediate and rear silencers in a shop are: 80€ for the supersprint. I think that i will buy this.

Now i find in a used part web a used 4-1 manifold for 120€, i think that is a good price, 200€ for all the free line with the 4-1 manifold is the best price that i can find here. what you think? (a new 4-1 cost 500€ aprox).

Hola y bien venido!

Shipping things from the UK is not that expensive, I have done it loads of times for various components for my car. English ebay also have loads more parts than Spanish ebay but you have to make sure that the sellers are willing to send to Spain. Most are, but some are not.
About your exhaust. I would replace all of it and not just part of it. Again, English ebay is a good starting point as long as you can find a person willing to send such an item to Spain. Many of the English companies are also very helpfull and if I were you, I would call a company called Jetex. I Have this exhaust system on my car and I am very happy with it.
Be carefull when modifying your car though, the Spanish authorities do not like it. If your car has a cat, keep it or you could have problems.

^^^ as above I also have the full jetex system on my 16v, the quality and fit is very good. It's not too loud when cruising but does have a nice note when floored at mid range revs.

Yes, now i'm looking in english ebay, are very interesting products, and more options that in spain ebay. Jetex sell free lines? i only found complete lines with silencers in their web, like this http://www.jetex.co.uk/website/jetex_exhausts_chooser.php?mak=Volkswagen&mod=Golf+Mk2+16V&mat=Aluminised+Steel

I'm looking for a free line, a simple tube until the last silencer, but it must be moduleable, because one day i can need put the intermediate o rear silencer, and another day i can want go without silencers.

In Spain the loud is very persecuted, and is very dificult go with a unhomologated silencers, but i will homologate my golf for competition, and i will can go with a loud of 98db. This is the only limitation about the exhaust, but if any day i want to go to a circuit like... montmelo, i can put the complete line free. This is that i think.

Thanks !

PD: It's correct call it "free line"? or have another name in english?

hi mate, i think when you say "free line", you mean "straight through".....

so what you want is a straight through system, with a rear silencer

thanks
