Title: anyone used the Lamin-x headlight film?
Post by: stokeballoon on 27 October 2008, 16:58
I was thinking about getting some Light Tint or clear film.  Anyone used it?

Can get some uncut in the uk for about £27 +PnP.  that gets you 12" x 20" sheets (2 off).

I think that Audi looks sensational. The film will look amazing on a black GTi, I wonder how good it will look on a white GTi though? Normally the whole black/white contrast works really well, so I hope it works out ok.

Can this be used on the rear lights also? A cheaper alternative to buying R32 tails??

Great find stoke!

....And the MOT testers! Doesn't it reduce the lighting strength?

They definitely won't like it if you use blue film!!

Agreed RR.

As an aside, on the other forum, there is a chap called Royster who has answered, I first met this chp on the UK-MKIVS forum about 5 years ago.

He had an R32 I think back then.

....Yep, Roy used to have an immaculate black Mk4 R32 (I've driven it). He misses it a lot. I see him regularly, about once a month usually - Good guy and an ace at detailing. Drives an Audi at the moment.

Sorry,  just seen this and I concur with Mat, you will need 2 sheets of 12" x20".  I am going to order mine this week, in order to be eligible for the 25% discount, order before 1st Nov.

Still not sure about the Light Tint, on a Steel grey car, or just clear for the protection factor.  I had thought about getting some protectors, but dont like the way they fit, and the grit and dirt they attract.

Hi guys,

I was at the prosport RR day so met some of you there.

I run the lamin-x on my car, though i ordered the pre cut stuff from the states rather than the sheets from the uk.
I have the tint 5% and have had no issues with illumination, though that is with xenons, stadard lights may suffer more???

The tint looks great in direct sunlight, however, can look very dark in the shade - i'm still in two minds whether to keep it on my Sprint S3.

Red, Black, White and silver/grey cars work really well:

On the American website they do Tint and Smoked, Uk site only has smoked which looks darker.

Looking at your sig it will deffo work on your car, black rims and the black grill will complement it well.
I'd ask the UK what tint it is.... like I said all the S3 chaps have gone tint 5% and that is dark enough.... anymore and illumination may suffer.

Are you sure that the 5% tint is enough? Arn't the clusters on the GTI black tinted anyway (the inside clusters, not the lenses), therefore I want this tinting film to make it look noticeably more than the stock...? I suppose the film tint combined with the cluster tint will make it look darker...?
Title: Re: anyone used the Lamin-x headlight film?
Post by: neg on 28 October 2008, 23:02
Yes they are darker insides on the GTI which mean you would not need so much of a tint to make them look even more different than a non GTI golf - IMO
Title: Re: anyone used the Lamin-x headlight film?
Post by: jamiekip on 29 October 2008, 00:21
The S3 has darkened internals to the light clusters too and trust me 5% tint will be more than enough to make a difference.
This shot was taken under fluro lights but gives you an idea... 50:50

....Unless I've misinterpreted, the Xenon versions are not darker on the insides^

As an aside, what do the smaller inner lights do? I'm not able to put them on!

Aren't they for the brights? They go on when the high beam is on, together with the xenon beam allowing more light through as well. On my car at least.

....That's what I thought but apparently the later Bi-Xenons don't do this AFAIK.

Funny you should ask as I wondered the same and checked mine.

Bi-Xenon = Dipped beam + lense moves for full beam in addition to the halogen inside lights, side lights being underneath unlike on the normal halogen lights which are where inside light is.

I think the inside is a vagcom option.

....I've now been out for a short drive and checked mine again and also phoned my friendly VW dealer who checked the new car in their showroom and he phoned me back to say they should work like you have just described^.

He also thinks it's a vagcom option but not necessarily one which Joe Public would have. The dealers have more extensive options and he said they would slip in the change FOC when my car is next in for something else. Not all VW dealers are arseholes!

Thanks for the help, neg :afro:
