hi
i recently brought a J reg MK2 golf driver 1.8 with 140,000m on the clock. ever since i had it the revs were a bit strange it would idle about 1500 to 2000rpm but ran fine. The other day the idle went down to about 1000 and less but not stable moving up and down. It has now started stalling whan i pull the clutch in even when the engine is warm then today as i pulled up to a junction (had been stalling along the whole 2hour journey) i noticed steam or smoke coming from the drivers side od the bonnet, i pulled over but couldnet seee anything. on closer inspection i think there is some oil in the inlet/exhaust manifold under the carb. and it sounds a bit like there is air escaping from the engine!!
Does anyone have an idea on what this is?? could it b a head gasket failing??
please help me as i use the car regularly and its my only transport but i dont want to break it by driving it now.
cheers

is it over heating aswell?
-
no i sure it wasnt the needle didnt go past the 1/4 mark (the guage does work its bin up to 1/2 before)

could be MAF sensor dirty or failing. not really sure. the pros will be on later!lol

Just to say, I would sh!t myself if it did that and run to the nearest garage lol!

it's carbed

ooops  leaky float maybe?

have a look at the 2e2 faq in the garage section. random stallin can be due to carb icing, checkthe warm air feed pipe, the metal shroud on manifold and vac hoses all present & correct
-
maybe just a busted vacuum pipe or summet :undecided: :undecided:
-
cool ill just checked the pipe that splits off from the main air hose to a silver looking thing under the inlet manifold has broken away, if i replace this and it fixes the car stalling would it also explain the steam/smoke coming from the bonnet?
-
yep yep yep :)
tip top

where abouts is the smoke coming from? i always had a wee wisp of smoke once engien was hot coming from under the inlet manifold. I assumed it was leaky zaust gasket at 1st, but then when i removed inlet manifold i found it was the rubber oring for inlet manifold/carb coolant channel leakin coolant onto zaust. This would explain why your car runs like pap too ;)

it came out of the drivers side (RHD) at the top corner. it was only for a few seconds by the time i got out and opend the bonnet it wasnt steaming so ime not sure exactly where it came from. ill replace the hose tomoro and see if this fixes the problem

it's most likeyl to be oil or water finding its way onto the exhaust manifold, if you have a lecky rocker gasket oil can collect on the inlet mani water can to or it can leack from the manifodl / head joint

I don't know if these cars have carbs that sit on a sandwiched rubber gasket like the older Audis used, but if so, the rubber could be split. Start the car and let it warm up, (if you can) then grab the carb and gently rock it in all direction whilst listening to the note of the engine. If the engine stalls, changes rpm or other strange things, then the chances are that the gasket is split and you need a new one.

ok i jus replace the hose but still no luck. it seemed to idle ok'ish from cold (revs between 700ish and 1500ish) but the exhaust gas was a bit black (it left a mark on my garage door-oops) but as it warmed up it jus kept on stalling i start it up and the revs would just drop untill it stalled, when it would run ime sure there was a sound of escaping gas or air from the right side of the engine (looking into the engine bay from front of car)
should i just take it to a gargae or does anyone have ideas?
cheers
