how do you do this on a Mk2 16v Gti distributor, believe its from the KR engine if that's any help but i think they;re all pretty similar

If you mean how do you literally take it apart, I found this very difficult and ended up buying a new one. The rotor arms that come attached to the new dizzy's often need crunching up with some pliers as they are glued on solid.

i took a dizzy of a audi 80 2.0l 16v at week end fiteed and works a treat cost me 5 quid from scrappy

No it needs to be taken apart, i have a part from inside one distributor that needs transferring to another and yes they are both off of the car

Any chance of a photo.
Apparently the vw rotor arms are glued on, so you literally smash the rotor to put a new rotor arm on.

There is a small pin that holds the drive on (the bit that sits on the cam).  Punch that out and the shaft will pull out.  You can also replace the Seals as well.
