Hi Guys,
I'm very seriously considering doing the 2l bottom end conversion to my 8v digifant. I now have access to a complete mk3 golf gti 8v to use all parts and wanted to know if A) The mk3 gearbox can be used, B) If there is any pros and cons in doing this?
By the way the donor mk3 in question is an 'R' reg so has the engine code AGG i believe?
Cheers

I don't think there are any downsides to what you're suggesting. It's a stronger gearbox and clutch - bigger input shaft.

ok, are the gear ratios much different to the mk2 8v gearbox? at a guess i imagine the 5th gear would be fractionally longer?
If i were to do the 2l bottom end conversion and keep the mk3 gearbox, would i need to change anything to accommodate it such as mk3 clutch cable or slightly different gear linkages?
cheers

anyone have any idea? help is much appreciated

the 2.0 gear box is a direct swap for the mk2 except for the clutch. you use a mk3 2.0 clutch as the input shaft is bigger on the gear box, thats it the rest just bolts up as if it were a mk2 box

Thanks there danny_p.
Just another thing that would be useful to know is if the mk3 gearbox ratios are any different to the mk2's?

1st and 2nd are, 3rd 4th and 5th are taller..
clicky for info i wrote in my project (http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=46057.msg796941#msg796941)

That was really helpful to read thanks,
Looks like it will be a good idea to use the box too then when i do the conversion.

MK3 box also works with MK2 16v gearbox. the gearbox is NOT any stronger however, the internals are made of the same grade of stilton. Yes the input shaft is bigger but that doesnt really amke any difference to the strength. I.e. if you had enough torque to snap the input shaft the box would explode way before then.
as said main advantage is the slightly more relaxed ratios dfor cruising (could be seen as a disadvantage if sportyness is what you want) other advantage is it'll be a bit newer. Just make sure the reverse gear is ok, they tend to be a problem more on MK3s.
