Hey guys,
If I put a 1.8 gti engine into my golf what am I going to need to change?
Engine + Loom + alternator + distributor are the obvious ones I think.
I think i also read that the fuel pump would need changing and obviously the breaks aswell!
Have I missed anything? I'm not sure what else is different under the bonnet of a GTI to my car.
A guy I know has just done a 8v to 16v conversion and it looks pretty straight forward (would get him to help  but on the whole!)
Cheers,
Dec

Gearbox too. might as well stick in a lightened flywheel and a new clutch while you have the GTi engine out and waiting for the transplant.
Master cylinder and the other thingy (can't remember it's name atm) along with the brakes.
Full zhaust system.
Might as well upgrade the engine mounts too while you're at it.
Clocks too, unless you've already got the rev counter clocks.
The front and rear badges
-
Sweet cheers mate! My project to source it all now  Should have saved up the extra for my insurance premium by then
-
The other thingy I couldn't remember just came to me, it the brake servo.
I'd like to do this too, but might be getting rid of the MK2 for a 7 seater Sharan soon, #3 might be on the way soon  :undecided:

And brakes...........................................................

 What I mean is from rear drums to discs, so the whole setup which is what you proberly mean.

Dec, have a lookie at my page.. progressively through it youll see everything you need, and a lot more Over-Prep on my part
-
You don't have to upgrade the rear brakes as they don't do a great deal. I'd stick with my drum brakes because I've read when the rear brakes (on a disc setup) have been abused, then the car parked up and the brakes cool down the car rolls away :lipsrsealed: Probably not common nor a cause not to upgrade them, but I'm paranoid like that and life hates me so my car would roll off a cliff
-
or you could look into using a 2.0 block with1.8gti head and driver carb and gti exhaust that would save you installing injection and fuel pumps and tanks
-
I think DH will be along soon to tell you off for saying use a carb instead of Digi injection
-
Thats the main point of changing! I hate carbs at the moment
*Googles "fitting injection to a mk2 driver"*
-
if he does i will appolagise
but why fit gti engine in a driver when you can buy a gti

For the challenge!
Unless you're going for a twin carb setup I don't think it will be worth it and no need to apologise, it's a free forum for open discussion

Because I can't afford to buy a GTI while ive got this still and then the insurance aswell. So thought i may aswell source all the bits and give it a go...
Think ive decided to save up and buy an amazing GTI now though :undecided:
-
if its for a challenge why not fit 16v as it will be more or less the same amount of work or get giddy and go for vr6 or 1.8t
-
Because insurance on anything other than an 8v is crazy! And an 8v is still a bit too much atm
I hate being 18!

no he did that himself..
its kjet youre not allwoed to use under his guidance.. and also dannys.. beleive me.. ive ahd to hear it all

He told someone off for suggesting using carbs on a GTI block before... such a hypocrite

8v 1600 to 8v 1800 is a very easy swap. the webber 32/34 dmtl is perfect for it as long as it's in good condition. with dizzy from a k jet and, certan things in the inlet manifold adjusted it will make more power than a standard gti enigne. and works very well and is generaly very reliable tho any problem that occur will normaly be carb related.
digifant 2 will make the enigne easyer to live with, once it's setup it should allways idel nicely the webebr tend to creep out on the idel speed tho it's quickly put back to something sensible. but digi 2 is quite limuted and needs tweeks on anything other than a stock motor to get the best out of it. on 2ltrs the webber works ok but it's not ideal. on a hot 2.0 the manifold itself starts to become an issue as well as the carb, thats asking it to do over 150% of what it was desinged to do

It's currently a carbed car. This means you've got a lot to do to get it to injection.
I staved off going to injection on my Syncro for some time due to the complexity of the upgrade. What carb does Dec have at the moment? Weber or Pierburg?
If it's a Weber 32/34DTML you need to find out why it's not running well. Is it worn? Are the jets correct? Do you have proper air-feed equipment on it, not some donkey pan filter?
Unless the engine is shagged, before you dive in and tear the engine out, why not sort the handling and braking first?
This means a GTI rear beam, which has the rear anti roll bar stapled on it, as well as the discs.
If you're going to rear discs then you need to add in the brake compensator unit too, so you're into a lot of hard-line replacement, too.
As someone's already stated, upgrading the fronts will give you far more improvement anyway. A modest upgrade to 256mm and a 22mm master cylinder will see you right for now.
I only suggested that someone was an idiot to run carbs when they were proposing replacing their injection system with carbs. Now that would be dumb. K-Jet's ripe for lampooning as various people fete it and it's chronically out-moded these days.
If I was you and I wanted to upgrade your car I'd pick up a 2.0 block, crossflow 8V head, get it lightly breathed upon and tweaked to fit, buy a Megasquirt system, a stub manifold and some bike throttlebodies and make yourself something properly zingy yet simple.
By the sounds of it the OP's already made the sensible decision - buy a GTI to replace his existing car. Provided the engine runs reasonably well then there should be a 17 year old keen to buy your car as a first step on the ladder. Plenty of GTIs out there to choose from.
-
Thanks DH. Only problem it has with running is when its really cold i have to wait for it to warm up before going anywhere (unlike injection cars).
I currently have a weber on it with the standard airbox + crappy pannel filter. Can you recommend an upgrade?
As I refuse to pay what theyre asking for insurance on a GTI this year, im going to save up a bit and buy a clean example in the summer and swap my insurance over. This way I won't have to worry about messing anything up on my Driver and ending up car-less.
Cheers,
Dec

Does your Weber have a manual choke?
Is it connected?
Do you have the warm air feed from the exhaust manifold still installed?
If it is then maybe you should get the carb set up on a rolling road (including the idle jets), get this done by an experienced carb-tuning operator and your car should be happy hot or cold.
Make sure your car is set up properly and get out there and learn to drive it properly on some B-roads. You should be capable of having plenty of fun with it as it is right now.
-
why dont you put up with the power till you can afford a 16v next summer. ( if you can afford to insure an 8v a 16v is not much more) and spend all your time and money on the chassis till then which can all be swapped over, theres plenty to do and it will make you quicker than an engine swap overall. and just do the simple things like karekhartum is doing to get a few more horses if you get bored.
even dh's crossflow 2.0l 8v suggestion wont be as quick as a bog standard 16v, you will just be wasting your time tbh
-

the crappy littel K&N that sits in the factory airbox is about the best option, the filters that cause problems are the ones that bolt direcctly on top of the carb.
-
Wise choice in buying the real thing.
Trying to upgrade a Driver is a waste of time. There is a lot more to the GTI than just engine.
As for the comment about the rear discs vs drums - you having a laugh? Rear discs make a big difference to braking. They still might only do 30% of the braking, but its 30% more than drums.
-
if its your first car and you wont have a gti for 3 years its not a waste of time! but as the op is buying one next year i think it would be.
so you fitted lightweight tappets yet tinman?
