I just wondered, my new mk2 16v has been driven on Optimax by it's last owner and has no problems with it, I can't really afford Optimax and would rather use normal unleaded, what problems (if any) whould i encounter, any timming adjustments needed?
Thanks for any help

There shouldn't need to be any adjustments at all, but if you can stretch to optimax I would do, I'm just about to start using it myself after using unleaded. From some of the threads I've seen on here it appears that the fuel consumption is better with optimax, so even though it cost more you should get more mpg so the cost should be negligable anyway, try it out for a couple of tank fulls and see how it goes.

mate, strech the extra pennies per litre to use optimax.
it makes sense to because youll recoup that back and more because of the petrol consmption.
you have obviously got a much loved golf because the previous owner used optimax,
dont scrimp a few pennies on such a vital thing for your car, its just not worth it in the long run.
i bet your car is running sweet?
u wanna keep it that way, use optimax! ;D

Ok, I did not know about the better mpg, thanks - Optimax is that Shell? will superunleaded from ASDA or Tesco work just as good?
Cheers

Aye, optimax is shell, don't even bother with the supermarket fuel as it's regurgetated treacle ! :)
-
optimax is only shell mate ;)
the others wouldnt work as well :)
-
shell here I go ;)

i know its hard to use optimax when you see 2 pumps next to each other and theres a 9p difference between the two, but i try to think as the difference between otpitmax and regular like the difference between diesel and petrol.

::)
wise words,
optimax is the golf gti of petrol! :D

I can't sing the praises of Optimax enough. I had the head of an engine that has done about 10 000 miles and has always been run on optimax (since its rebuild) and it was as clean as a whistle.
There is no substitute for high quality fuel.

you can quite happily run the car on Super Unleaded or LRP, these are 97RON which is a lot better than std Unleaded which is 95 RON
Optimax is 98 RON - which is ideal but expensive
BP Ultimate is 97 RON - which is just bloody expensive
and stuff about supermarket petrol being treacle is a load of sh!te.
reason its cheaper is because they can afford to buy more in bulk than your local Shell garage which is simply a franchise, and therefore owned by a person.
its as clean as you get anywhere else, in fact id rather by from supermarkets as at least then you know its not being lying in their tank for 3.5 years.
personally i run my 16v on LRP due to the fact you cant get Optimax in N.Ireland, and LRP is 7p a ltr cheaper than Super Unleaded.
and my car hasnt hasnt skipped a beat since the day i bought it

also, u dont need any adjustments as the ECU will adjust the timing on a 16v
