Just had a row with vw after they serviced my car they managed to overfill my car by half inch with engine oil! took it back they agreed it was over filled and drained it. twits!
decided to do at least the oil changes myself from now on as the cant get an oil change right, anyway, the service manual recommends oil levels up to crosshatched is this correct or do you fill up to the top kink? whats the general concensus and what type of oil is recomended?

The level up to cross hatched is the minimum (I thought) I tend to make sure mine stays about 1/2 to 3/4 up to the top kink. As for oil I just tend to use VW spec 15w/40 (I think...need to check) as the miles are clocking up on my GTI and so I wanted plenty of protection and not too thin an oil like magnatec, etc. Seems a good quality oil and not bad a price.....which is an added bonus!!
