What would a reasonable oil temperature be on the dash, when caning ones car? And at what point should one slow down a bit?
-
up to 120 is OK, start getting worried above that.

 do a search, LOADS of threads on this, highest mine got was 132

i was waiting for a temperature thread. As the ones in the search aren't specific enough for my question.
Seen a few questions about peoples cars not heating up enough, and quite a few responses saying replacing the thermostat is the answer.
When cruising on the motorway 70 give or take a few 10mph, my temperature is really low, just between the bottom line and the bulb? is this too low? oil is around 100.
The thermostat rises to about 3/4 in traffic (which seems normal, and would suggest it is working) and then the fan comes on and it prevents it getting higher.
Having never had a thermostat on a car before, is it normal to be this low on the motorway? I figure the faster you go (to an extent) taking it easy in 5th, wont cause the engine much stress, and there is a lot of air flowing over the engine, cooling it. should I be worried about operating temps etc?
its been a while since anything broke, probably just looking for problems.
cheers

Sounds like your stat is stuck open. Mine was in my Rado when I got it and had the same symptoms. New stat and O ring from VW sorted it a treat.

i used to race sidecar and we were always told by the oil freek specialist's that your oil work's best between temp's of 70 to 115 c :) above that it start's to loose it's lubricating property's or summet like that i just nodded politely and screemed off out the paddock on the sidecar
but wi had data logging on the bike and the oil temp's were about 110 c during the race so i guess that was ok as we never blew any moto'rs up and i reved them to 14,000 :)
well till we changed to the latest RR honda motor (swear it was made of chocolate) but that is another story
