Title: window rubbers rattle!
Post by: JoeGTI on 20 October 2008, 15:14
Hi folks,
Just wondering if any of you guys have had problems with your window/door rubbers "rattling", or more importantly, what's the solution to it?!

The noise I'm talking about is the one that seems to happen eventually to all cars I've owned in recent years, where the rubber seals on the doors seem to dry up and chatter.

- Lowering the window a few mm's stops the noise.
- Cleaning the rubbers with a damp cloth stops the noise temporarily, but it comes back again in no time.
- I tried silicon spray and that made it worse!

Any other ideas? Its got to be a common enough issue.!

I've heard of this stuff before, something to do with BMW's I think? I don't think I've ever seen it in any motor factors I've been in though...

Excellent Blue, I'll try one of those lads on Ebay, mucho appreciate your help

I'd be interested in hearing if others have had this problem though... I was plagued with it in my Audi A3, its a very common issue on the A3. It irritated me to say the least to hear the familiar rattle and groan from my door in the GTI over the weekend

yeh, let us know how you get on, PS if both parts that touch are rubber apply it to both sides, it the side the rubber hits is painted apply a decent wax on the painted area (Autoglym srp or something will do), this helped my problem on my old car

Will do.
The problem seems to be the "felt" type material that surrounds the window frame and makes contact with the metal door opening... when the door is closed and I press my hand against the closed glass, I can hear it squeek and groan! Wiping it with a wet cloth gets rid of it... temporarily!

yeh i had that too, i found polishing the paint in that area helped

ps, you reminded me i was low on Gummi so i just bought some, PPS its very good for the colder months as it stops the doors freezing up

Last thing I wanted was a dreaded trip to the stealers!

in my expereince they cant fix it, on the foci they changed rubbers for people but it of course comes straight back when they have been on a while, i find applying gummi 2-3 times a year keep it going nicely, that and keeping both area of contact clean etc

Gaz, my A3 was terrible for it, loads of people over on audi-sport.net complain about it
I believe it affects 3-door cars to a greater degree, with the extra large doors.

Eeek.  WD40 and rubber are a bad mix.  I'd try and remove the WD40 residue, and use only a silicone based lubricant on any kind of natural rubber, including door seals.

I meant to reply back to this sooner...
I got a bottle of this Gummi Pfledge stuff about 2 weeks ago and since I applied it, I've been rattle free! My doors are as quiet as a mouse, no more creaking over the bumps, it feels like a new car again - all for 10 euro and no dreaded visit to a stealer

Massive thanks to 182_blue for this extremely helpful suggestion
