I've been thinking about converting my 89 mk2 16 valve to a G60 is it worth it ?and what would be involve to do it?? Is it easy or hard to do?
-
G60s - expensive if they break, which is something they're keen to do.
Fit an ABF instead.
-
...but they are fun to drive and make a great noise. Not sure I would run one as a daily though, as they do like a drink, especially with a smaller pulley.
-
As per Diamond.H, a slightly modded 16v won't be much slower than a G60 and will be far easier to maintain.
-
Reliability? Depends, if the conversion is done very well reliablity shouldn't be a problem, but otherwise it might.....
Never been head to head with an ABF in a Mk2 but My G has 180lb/ft torque from a 68mm Pulley.
What torque does an ABF make? I know you can get 170bhp+ with cams, but you will have to rev it.

Smooth torque curves ftw:

reliability? Think of it as an digi1 8v with a charger bolted on the front and it becomes far less daunting
-
I CAN Haz 2 MORE HORSEZ !
Ohh but you haz more torques.
I FAIL !

I can has 199 on a different RR too.
Can haz newman camz tho.

i no i may be being dumb but whats a ABF ??
-
its a mk3 Golf 16v Gti. its a 2L
also found in mk2 Seat ibiza Gti's like mine. and ,maybe some other Vag cars

At what rpm?
-
daft question prob , but how do i know if i've found an ABF engine :undecided: :undecided:

2l 16v from a mk2 gti, or from an ibiza gti too i think.
-
my torqe peacked at 5890 rpm
going to avoid a torque argument with a heathy g60 tho, it's boosted it's going to make torqe.
reliablity wise the g60 lumps themselves are pritty much bomb proof but big end shells are a weakness. the glader howerver ain't so reliable. it has to be said in it's defence that they are quite efficent and they deliver boost in a really nice way but, there are sooo meany crap ones out there. how often do you find a G that really just dosent perform as it should do and is in desperate need of a rebuild , or a rebuilt g that eats itself vurtualy straight away. and they do require a bit to often for my likeing

MK2 GTI Golf? Nah. MK3 GTI Golf. Yah!
Found in MK3 GTi's
Seat Ibiza/Toledo
16V 2.0 Passats?
Corrado 2.0 16V
and probably a few others.

I have a genuine G60 and I wouldn't have another one. I have heard that if you want 16v upgrades, then you can fit a 16v 2.0 from a MKIII, and then fit your original 1.8 16v camshafts. The 2.0 unit produces 150BHP standard, but with 1.8 cams, the BHP increases somewhat.
Perhaps someone more knowledgeable about swaps could enlighten this response with figures/corrections.
-
16v cam arguments  i prefer abf cams over kr , abf cam has more lift but less duration gives about same max bhp but pulls better in low rpm ( given that everything else is the same ) 9a cams are the sub optimal ones
got a dyno print posted up somwhere on here. think i can get 185 before have to look at the head or cams. am going to try get an NA 200 +

That'll be the 9a in the rado
Passats also had the 9a, although the later ones may well have had the abf too?
-
So realistically is it much of a mission to drop an abf in a mk2? If its not then I'm sure my brother and I can work it out. The one big question I have to add to this thread is what do you then do about exhausts? does a mk3 aftermartket system fit or what? :embarassed:

What rolling road was that on! I want a go so my Rado pulls a million bhp!

That's with a decat and custom tubular manifold iirc. Stock management though
-
Ah right so infact not stock at all, that explains it, ha ha.
My 9a should produce about the same decatted with the KR cam and a manifold but no one does a manifold for RHD cars :-(
Nick
-
Well the TSR manifold i have came off a RHD rado...
-
really? Humm interesting. I was told no one did one off the shelf that fitted due to the PAS rack getting in the way and the volume of RHD 16v Rados sold was not big enough to warrant anyone producing one.
