Title: Uneven tyre wear
Post by: Peely-wally on 19 October 2008, 17:15
I have noticed uneven tyre wear on my front wheels.  The tyres have worn a lot more in the centre of the tyre to the point that I need to change them.  Immediate thoughts were that I had overinflated them but I checked this and they were at 31psi and VW recommend 35psi.  I am running Goodyear F1 GSD3s on 18inch alloys.  I am going to get the tyres replaced with Goodyear Assymetrics.

Any suggestions on why the uneven wear or recommendations on tyre pressure would be much appreciated. Ta

Standard size wheels - go with VW recommendations.

I would also get a tracking and alighnment check to be on the safe side - if it doesnt need altering most places dont charge so worth getting it checked out.

As above. Get the tracking looked at and this should solve it.

I'm running the same tyres and have exactly the same wear problem. I checked the pressures too and they are spot on. I've just taken it to be an idiosyncrasy of the tyre/car combination and I'll get different tyres next time.

....I ran Goodyear GSD3 F1's on Monza 18's for just over 20k miles without any uneven tyre wear issues.

I phoned the VW garage that performed my last service and they confirmed that they would have checked my tyre pressure.  I asked what pressure they inflate the GTI tyres to and they said 2.2bar, not the 2.4bar that is specified on the fuel filler cap.

I am gonna get the tracking checked at the weekend.  In the meantime I have just had to replace the front tyres, so have got some assymetrics on the front now.  Grip, ride and noise much improved.
