Title: service intervals !
Post by: tonyh on 19 October 2008, 16:54
i'm sure the subject's been done to death but nonetheless i am shocked that gti comes set up from factory for long life servicing - imho 2 years is way too long to wait . Any number of issues could develop over this period and it allows the uncaring owner to thrash the  new car to bits & sell it  on after  2 yrs - on a  car that's never been  near even  an oil change
Anyway, i've just had an annual done early -car's a year old in december- and interval's been changed to annual/mile specific. Any thoughts pls?

I don't believe they come set from the factory it's the dealer that does it as part of the PDI.

Mine asked what I wanted and recommended Time & Distance rather than the Long Life as I had plans to remap etc. However I asked them to still use the higher quality long life oil.

as above, also if the owner does thrash it there's now way it will get too two years, they will be lucky to get to a year imo

Not sure to be honest as mine is currently under a servicing plan I bought with the car which includes for the first three services so they didn't charge me, but I wouldn't expect it to be much more than £10-15  :undecided:

In future (if Costco are still selling it cheaper) then I will buy the oil myself and give it to the dealer to use.

I know my first year t&d service will be £105, for longlife I was told of figures of about £200+

But wouldn't the long life service be the same as two of the T&D services?  :undecided:

yeh, apparently it can cost more to be on longlife as you have to have the full 20k service , whereas the t&d is an oil change (which i have since found can be done for £79)

Mine came with longlife servicing from the factory and I wasn't asked what I wanted when I ordered it (I wouldn't have chosen longlife).  If your options sticker (in the boot or service book) has the code "QG1" then it came with longlife from the factory.  If it says "QG0" or "QG2" then it is set on Time & Distance.

I too have had mine serviced early at 10k and had it switched to Time & Distance and paid £97.17.

My ED30 is on longlife, however first service came in at 13,000 and the computer has just indicated that my 2nd service is due in 800 miles (about 2 weeks) at 27,500 - that works out about every 9 months!

Perhaps should switch to time & distance!

All advice i have read points towards time and date servicing for anything like a sporty car if you want to look after your car its a no brainer. T&d it should be
