I'm looking to convert a manual Y-Reg GTi to automatic but have no idea what auto box was used in the Mk1 or if it was shared with another VW models so i could try and source a second hand one.
Has anyone got any info on it? :undecided:

pretty much any 1.6+ MK1/2/3 golf auto box will do you, probably Passats too? Main issue you're going to have is finding the MK1 specific mounts and shifter bits, throttle linkages/cables, pedal box etc. Maybe put up a wanted see if anyone has gone the other way! Scirocco inj prob only place to get some of the bits, I dont think VAG ever made auto MK1 GTIs!

yeah i thought as much, i know the Mk1 Clipper definitely came with an auto box and with it being a 1.8 i assumed it would do, its just trying to find one breaking. Just wasn't sure if any tall block engines would have a suitable box. I guess if i found a Mk1 clipper breaking i could use the linkages and pedal box from that :undecided:
No don't think there was an auto Mk1 GTi but then again there may have been one for the US?
Not much point in putting a wanted ad here as i live in northern ireland and wouldn't like to try and get a gearbox shipped over

ah yes of course, clipper would be a good source of parts if you can find a 1.8 inj model with auto. Most of the bits are not engine specific, MK1 tintop, cab, rocco etc will all fit just the actual engine bits you need from a 1.8/1.6 inj model. Then you want an autobox with ratios designed for a 1.8 inj lump too, though i dont really know how much ratios differ between boxes.
