Title: Timing question
Post by: Steve_B on 18 October 2008, 21:37
Just to make sure, I've found 2 marks on the camshaft flywheel/sprocket. One is a punched dot on the outside, the other is a notch on the inside. The notch lines up with the top of the head at the front when no 1 piston is TDC and the rotor arm lines up with the mark on the dizzy.

I'm hoping this notch is the mark I should be looking at, the Haynes manual is as clear as usual

EDIT: 8v btw

I've read that but it talks about a punched hole on the inside. Confused and getting a headache

Getting the hang of this I think. But, anyone know how to turn the intermediate shaft without taking the lower cambelt cover off? Have set the crankshaft to TDC and the camshaft sprocket is set to the mark but the dizzy is pointing about 60 degrees anti-clockwise of the mark.

When i did this i put abit of slack in the toothed belt and managed to spin the dizzy rotor arm roughly to number '1' position.

abit if a mission removing the bottom cover

True, the bolts on those pulleys are rusted in. So you can twist round the dizzy rotor arm with the tension off the belt and that's the same as turning the intermediate shaft?

One more question. Does anyone know the size of the bolt that goes into the lower cambelt cover? The one kinda between the alternator and water pump. Mine was missing.

Think it's no 15 actually. Where did you get that from? They don't have info on the bolts by any chance?

hmm, should be a punch mark on the head side of the cam, makles me think your cam sprocket is on the wrong way round! If I was you I'd have the cam cover off and check the cam lobes visually and see if they match up to either of the marks. At tdc the cam lobes on #1 will be pointing up and away from each other, like this-> |\ /|
If not whip off the sprocket and flip it round!  Put cam cover back on and stuff a socket extension thru the cam sprocket spokes ;)

Cheers rj. Think I get what you mean, the 2 cam lobes next to the sprocket will have the pointy bits pointing upwards, which kinda makes sense if the piston is at the top of its travel.
The bolt for the sprocket has proved to be very stubborn so far, might have to see if the finances will stretch to a longer wrench!
