Title: Just collected my GTI Ed 30
Post by: tobydog on 18 October 2008, 20:45
Hi,

Just picked up my brand new GTI Edition 30 yesterday, silver 3 door manual and i've completely fallen in love with it.  It's my first GTI, i've been an avid VW and GTI fan for years and finally my time has come!

Any Ed 30 enthusiasts giving tips on running my GTI in are welcomed as i've been hearing mixed messages over moden engines.

Thanks for being my first reply to this forum.  Will definitely check out the whole forum,  I like the VW badge so i'll be keen to see what else is being discussed.

Cheers.

No worries! Everything is discussed here mate, a lot of nonsense to be fair but a decent bunch. I understand that the ED30 engine is so tunable so you will have plenty of fun with it.

Hello & Welcome

As Martz said the ED30 is a very tunable package and there's lots of old threads on running in etc in the MK5 section (just have a search). :afro:

Welcome Tobydog

Good choice of car there

There have been a fair few threads on trails of thought about running in the motor. My take on it is this:-

1. Always warm the car up before giving it the beans (water to 90degrees plus about a minute on top for the oil to reach temp too)
2. Always let the car idle for 30 seconds or so before turning off the engine.
3. For the first couple of hundred miles, heep the engine under 3k revs
4. For the next 300 miles, keep it under 4k revs
5. Up to 800 miles keep it under 5k revs
6. Up to 1k revs keep it under 6k revs

If you do need to overtake during the running in period, don't worry as it won't hurt it - as long as you aren't doing it all the time

Bear in mind this is how I would run in my GTI, some are exponents of the "thrash it from day 1" school of running in, but I'd never subscribe to this view.

Thanks guys for welcoming me to the site, it will be good to share some common interests with some enthusiasts.

Thanks Hurdy for your advice on running in my Edition 30, I think I will certainly lean towards the air of caution and take it easy for the first 1000 miles rather than take any risk.  No doubt the 227 horses under the bonnet are more than capable of handling the odd 'blip' when I can't resist touching the throttle but other than that I will try to be good.

Had it out on some country back roads this weekend and found the handling remarkable, I look forward to many more runs out when I can drive it properly.

Not considered any sort of enhancement to performance yet, but in the future I think I will have to look into it.  I hear as a remap can tweak as much as 300bhp out of the engine, now that sounds impressive.

Look forward to checking out the full site.

I got my Ed 30 through Motorpoint in Peterborough, basically they had bought a load from Germany earlier in the year and are still selling them, although the numbers do seem to be quickly reducing.  I think after this batch they will slowly phase in the GTI Pirelli.  I am surprised at how very few Ed 30's I come across mind, I live in the North East and I think i've only seen one in Candy White.

My new GTI Edition 30 is fast approaching 1000 miles on the clock and I am starting to feel the engine loosening.  I have read some mixed opinions on how to run in the engine, but out of caution have decided to restrict my revs to 3000 RPM across all gears, with the occasional guilty blast .

What I ask next is what sort of driving treatment should I give my engine when driving?

I am very eager to push it a little, i.e. up to say 4.5-5k RPM in 3rd gear, but i'm not too sure what if any damage I will do.  Being an engineer I fully understand the engine is a designed to be used, but I don't really want to cause any unnecessary wear and tear if I can avoid it.  My aim is to have a little fun on some country back roads, but out of pure care for my new pride and joy, don't want to 'hurt' it.  Surly as long as I ensure the engine is warm, temp up to 90 and all other checks such as oil and water levels, then I cannot break the thing? Any guidelines will be much appreciated.
