have an 89 8v gti ... will the spline for the steering wheel be big or small?
thanks :afro:

if the hazard switch is on the dash it will be small, if its on the steering column, it will be a big spline.
being 89 its probably small.

not necessarily true...
my 88 (F plate) project had older electrics (hazard on dash) but BIG spline.
take the steering wheel off and see if the end of the column has a splined ring like this:

yes mate, just below the thread on the very end of the column (its what the steering wheel slots into). you can sometimes get the splined ring off which will turn your column into a small spline one, but i couldnt get mine off!

ok after a bit of a search i THINK they were changed to big splines after 88 mine has the hazard on the steering colum, my car is an 89 but has the 90spec arches/big bumpers etc but i think it was registered in 1990 ... all very confusing lol
thanks for the replies il bid on this steering wheel then

yes the spline adaptors were fitted from somewhere in 88, my mates totally std 88 didnt have the spline adaptor, and my 89 F driver did.
