Title: Round 2 - broken car!
Post by: Hurdy on 18 October 2008, 15:25
"Holy sh!t - what was that?"

Huge loud bang from under the car!

I went around a left turn corner at a junction - 10mph, no potholes, no hard braking or accelerating.

Then after that - bang, clank, bang, rattle, clank, bang

Got back to the house and looked under the car thinking a suspension link had gone somewhere and found this:-

The bracket for the front ARB has snapped at one side and now the car is garaged till I can get hold of a spare.

I've only had the ARB's fitted in May and so they have only been on the car for about 5 months.

I'll be phoning JBS to see what they can do for me on Monday

Pretty p1ssed of TBH.

I'm thinking I might ask for both brackets to be replaced as the other one will have been overstressed too and could be part of a dodgy batch :undecided:

Has anyone else ever known an aftermarket ARB bracket to fail like that?

Considering the loads that they take I would tink they make them out of granite.

I would ask that it be checked by the manufacturer as it could be a dodgy batch with a fault running through them, who knows how many people could have these just waiting to break.

Oooh, Went over to another forum :embarassed: and found JBS sales posting and realised they must work today. Phoned up and after a little explaination they are ordering two new brackets and fitting them for me. Top service again

Now all I have to do is convince myself that the original bracket was faulty! :undecided:

Are they an aftermarket part Hurdy, I was thinking about it after we spoke earlier and I'm pretty sure you re-use the VW ones with a different bush to take the larger diameter roll-bar. I'm sure you do with the eibach ones anyway

....

Is it the ARB link which is broken?

Neuspeed make some stronger ones : - http://www.neuspeed-europe.com/product.php?xProd=65&xSec=1&jssCart=040f5edc4dbf91ca1f1166fc961dc418 (http://www.neuspeed-europe.com/product.php?xProd=65&xSec=1&jssCart=040f5edc4dbf91ca1f1166fc961dc418)

My heart sank when I saw the title of the post and your name against it Hurdy... you've had more than your fair share of bad luck with that car. It seems that a lot of Ed30 owners seem to have bad luck... whats with this car?

fair enough, must be a manufacturing defect in the part, sort of puts you off though doesn't it

Mike at JBS is ordering the clamps on their own.

But it would also mean that something else will be damaged/broken whilst in at the dealers

Hurdy sorry to hear about another problem.  Atleast your safe and were not under heavy conering !!

I've seen OEM brackets snap, but never an aftermarket one, but that bracket did look a bit puny !

Hope this all will get sorted with the minimum of fuss !

I removed the Eibach bars from my car just before it was sold.  The OEM brackets aren't available seperately, only with a new ARB so mine had been welded up, what a pig to get off I can tell you.

Well, it is now Friday and I've just phoned JBS again.

Still no sign of the brackets, but "they will phone me if they turn up!"

********  **** ***!    I phoned JBS up last Saturday and was told that they would order it Monday and it would be "next day delivery" through UPS. Now I'm being told on Friday
that the part is coming from abroad and may take "some time" to arrive.

I can understand that JBS are at the fate of the post, but they could have been up front about it from the start  so I could have had time to look for an alternative

Looks like I will not be coming to the Prosport RR day tomorrow unless there is a minor miracle in the next 6 hours and it also looks like I may even be on the bus on Monday to get to work for the first time in XX years!

At this point I'm even thinking about going to get the bracket welded by a repairer and charge JBS for it!

Not happy at the moment, I've been on holiday all week and not been able to use the car at all!

That's total bummer!! I'm afraid I wouldn't be at all happy with JBS just because they appear to have misled you.

John, take it to your local garage today, take the oe arb, and get it put on, will take them about 1 and 1/2 hours and will cost about 50quid. i got a tyer specialist to fit mine. its really not that hard if you have a ramp, then you can come tomorrow and you have you car for the rest of the weekend ~ :afro:

Plus kick off with JBS next week so that when the new one does come, they want to be fitting it F.O.C at the very least..

All the Autotech parts are guaranteed for life and so if anything fails they replace and repair for free anyway.

To be fair JBS have been very good until this little blip and the fact that they are at the mercy of the postal system isn't their fault (although getting my hopes up was a bit off!)

JBS have just phoned (message on 121) saying the parts still haven't arrived, but they may have an alternative solution in the meantime! Just trying to get back in touch now!

Going over now - fingers crossed!

Well,

I'm back, JBS have managed to secure the ARB, so it looks like I'll be there after all...phew!

Time for a quick drink before spilling a bucket of wash over the car!

If you want to know what they have done......let's just say the OEM brackets can be made to fit....funny though...the front ARB has stopped squeaking now!
