Hi,
Can anyone shed some light on why the G60 gearbox is better than a normal mk2 box? Do they have stronger internals or shorter ratios?
-
Not sure about the ratios, although they won't be the same as a normal MK2 'box.
The internals are stronger so they can handle the extra power.
-
Much stronger (fingers crossed) and are cable change rather than rod change.

It's the cable-changeness of it wot means it's a lot stronger - it's a much different gearbox - much heavier vs the rod-changer.
These boxes can be found in anything from 2.0 8V Passats to Toledo 16Vs.... although the ratios will vary.
-
say i want a short ration box for my 1.6. What donor car would i need to tackle? toledo 16v or passat?
-
mk2 gti box, and transform a golf driver. if you want lower a mk2 16v box (lower 5th ) if thats not enough a 1600 mk1 gti box. and if thats not low enough ring and pinion set out of a blown up syncro box.
-
mk2 16v box sounds pretty good. But what if i wanted low ratio's 1-4 and a very long 5th for economical motorway driving?
-
thats the gearbox you have now, unless you swap 5th and do a hybrid box

oh so what ive got now has low ratios 1 to 4 and a long 5th? cos when doing 70 on the m'way its noisy as hell (cant see revs cos ive got the big ben)

Cheers for the info - I'd seen one for sale with the G60 box and that got me wondering!

ummmm beavis is the mad cog swapper, your box shoudl be the 4+e but if it goes well it may have a gti box swap ans that makes them go much better, don't think monster tall 5th gear is the worlds best idea in a 1.6 tho TBH the 2.0 motors make a lot more torqe so car will happily skip allong behind but they don't accselorate much go puttign a desile 5th in a 1600 and may have a nasty suprise if the engine dosen't have enogh torqes, so every time meet a slight uphill slope you have to dump down into 4th also if you fall off the end of the power curve ( favort habbit of hot engiens ) you end up going slower and slower even at full throttel but come on cam over 70 mph whitch would be brilliant for autoban briveing sadly we have congested road work ridden roads :(

Look udner your gearbox. bottom of the bellhousing right on the center at the bottom will be a code, 3 or 4 letters/numbers followed by a 6 digit number.. post that up!
