Welcome to the forum.

I think the button disarms the alarm system so you can work on the car.

Yep it disarms the ultrasonics inside so you can leave a dog in the car.

As you prob now know RED I means nothing as vw put on whatever badge came to hand

Red i means the difference between a 90 and 110bhp TDI deisel, right? Though that mightn't be right. On a petrol GTI I don't think it really means anything.

The blue i is the bigger output I think.

The red i means nothing, end of story.

It TENDS to be on the fruitier models e.g. the turbo, but as dealers could do what they liked, and as people have since replaced them etc, its now irrelevant.

I always understood the red "i" to mean it had a turbo, but as everyone else has said, it's likely that

a) badges have been replaced

b) stealers didn't give a stuff and just put on whatever badge they wanted.

My V5 has a Red 5 and it is the 170 version. The normal one is silver.

Indeed most people think that the "red I" mk4 golf is a turbo, Not true as said thay all have different badges regardless of being turbo or not!!

For diesels see below. I am certain of that.

TDI (All Red) is a 150bhp Diesel Engine

TDI (Red D, Red I) is a 130bhp Diesel Engine

TDI (Red I) is either a 115bhp or 110bhp Diesel Engine depending on the Year

TDI (All Silver) is a 90 bhp Diesel Engine

sounds about right to me.

mayb this was how they were meant to be, but over time, they have been changed soo much, that its now irrelevant.

but RED must have meant something when they first came out or there wouldnt have been any point in making different badges.

info regarding mk4 diesels is correct - I used to work for vwuk mk4 era.  now, I'm not so sure about the red'i' on my recent purchase '97 mk3 GTi badge but will be making enquiries - definately not turbo model btw. looks factory original as the rest of the car is. I'll report back if I get any more info.
