Title: MK4 Door Cards
Post by: The Mighty Elvi on 17 October 2008, 11:40
Right, it seems fairly straight forward to put in the 1.8t engine, dash and seats but what about the door cards.  Has anyone done this and is it a simple mod.

Asking becuase if i go to the trouble of buying a mk4 gti I want to use as much of it as I can, rather that going to a salvage yards and trying to get all the bits separately.

cheers.

You ever thought about just buying a Golf4 and running a Golf4?

Golf4 trim parts are designed for a Golf4.  Golf2 parts are designed for a Golf2.  Unlike engines and gearboxes which are very expensive to change and need a lot of R&D the trim is much easier to muck about with, so you're going to have much more of a time trying to make tat like door casings fit the much smaller Golf2 doors.

I think what you're proposing is an utter waste of time and will ruin a Golf2, but hey, it's your dime.

Just asking if it was feasable that's all.  Out of all the golfs I prefer the Mk2 Shape but you have to agree that the interior is a bit dated and the Mk4 interior is very hight quality.  I was just thinking that If I got to the trouble of putting in the engine gearbox and dash , why not go the whole hog?

For that I would recommend a trimming company, like ...Joe's Trimdeluxe.

PM him and see what he can do for you.

The MK2 interior is awesome, It's part the car and era. It rocks.

As my Dad's (pissed) mate said when he got in my Golf and had a look round/tried to focus "classic, f**king classic". He's used to a 348 and an evo6 and 8 though

No, the interior is now 'period' and befitting of the car.

Although Vicarage  (http://www.vicarage.co.uk/) (dreadful website by the way) fit a lot of later stuff to their MKII Jags, one thing you won't find them doing is fitting the interior of of an S-Type to them.

That's because it would be inappropriate, much like fitting a Golf4 interior to a Golf2.

Ok Ok  consider me castigated, vilified and pilloried!!

I just wanted to know if it was feasible, that's all.  I agree that you should keep the car original.  I would however consider upgrading the interior lighting on the switches and clocks.  Metal Monkey do some nice blue led clocks and perhaps upgrading the switch led's to red and yellow (on).

It's just that I've always liked the MK4 bule&red dials and switches that's all.

I think i'll just go for the 9a 2.0 cylinder Block and a bit of 'upgrading' of the interior.  if that's ok with the Borg.

By the way I'm 32 tomorrow and I just bought my first ever copy of Practical Classic magazine...am I doomed to be single forever?

The non-judgemental answer is: if your unhappy with the Mk2 interior, there a number of seat options e.g. Mk3 (easy), Mk4 (welding required), Cobra (expensive). You could have various bits re-trimmed (expensive-ish), or theres the full leather Mk2 interior (including leather door cards) which is more time-less. A dash transfer (e.g. the Mk4 GTI dash) is possible but difficult.

Cheers Conker.  If I guess correctly from your sig pic you have a 5 door in Royal Blue Metallic..like me.  A mate of mine used to own a Mk4 GT Tdi pd anniversary  and once I had a Mk4 Bora as a temp company car and I liked the Blue clocks, etc..

I just thought that If I could have the Mk4 interior 'experience' in the Mk2 16v Gti Shell it would be perfect.  I just wanted to know if it was possible.  I see that there are a  number of staunch advocates of 'keeping it real' on da forum.  Don't mean to upset the collective.

I'm comong from the angle of:
1. Does it please me to drive this car?
2. Is it a winner with the ladies?

I used to own a Mk4 1.8T and the interior was awesome.

You can put blue LEDS in the Mk2 if you want the Mk4 "look", the kits are VERY cheap on ebay, as in under £10, but it will be a little fiddly to install them in the clocks. Personally I wouldn't mod much of the interior, but the Mk4 seats were much more comfortable, so i would like to have them fitted eventually, and then the door cards would perhaps need a new cloth to blend them in better, but still trying to keep it as OEM as possible while still having a nice daily driver to sit in.

PS... Mine's pearl grey (mostly )
PPS... There is no "Collective" on here... Mod your car however you want to. The day this place turns into an ED38 nazi forum is the day I cut of my winky!
PPPS... Unless its just me, 99% of the girls I've met hate Mk2's. They would rather have a brand new Pug 207 with a nice cosy dealership warranty... So good luck with that!!

Most girls don't even know what a MK2 Golf is, in my cousins case she thought my Royal Metallic Blue was Green  Must be the air in Birmingham

can you imagine how perfect life would be if you found a girl who appreciated a Mk2 GTi.  If she then turned out to have a nice rack as well, my God!  you are the chosen one. A 16v GTi and a hottie as well...I'd be invincible.

Joking aside...are there any beautiful women out there who arn't chavs that appreciate a nice VW.  I'm thinking along the lines of Vicky Butler-Henderson's better looking sister.  But then again for some strange reason I have this thing for VBH.  She just seems like a minx who'd shag all day...and then strip down an engine..getting all oily and dirty....mmm...sorry...lost the thread for a minute there.

Am I alone in thinking this?

No.

Big thighs though.  More of a Golf3 girl, but with a Golf2 attitude.
