Title: to those that have modded.....
Post by: joesgti on 16 October 2008, 16:35
would you have modded your mk5, if it wasnt for this site, or other sites?

i would have still modded, maybe not to the extent that im taking the exterior but ive modded all of my previous cars ive have since i was 17 (including my first ever car, a sexy mk3 cab)

i believe others also inspire me to do things to me car, like robin with his carbon wing mirrors for example

so what about the rest of us? did you buy the gti with no intention of modding, then you found this section  or did you buy it knowing full well that you could make an absolute animal out of it

I probably would have done minor cosmetic mods such as changing the bulbs, or the foot rests or such but nothing more.

I remember when I first joined this forum back in April, started reading the mkv threads and after two days, I had a hankering for Carbonio intakes and remapping.

I bought my Ed30 simply because I thought it had all the extras I would need over the standard GTI.
However, after joining this site I soon got hooked on all the wonderful things that can be done to the MK5!
Not only that, it's almost getting to a point that I can't complete a day without wondering what's going on in here and have to log on to catch up on the goss!
Sad thing is I've got the 360 in the garage but there's not much you can do to it really! (apart from drive it and wash/polish it of course!)

As soon as I bought the ED30 I knew it wouldn't stay stock standard.

Didn't think I'd go this far and even now I know there is more to be done

Further list of to do's is:-

Quaife
Clutch plates
Whiteline kit
Alloys
Turbo upgrade
More CF
Interior trim
Possible paint job

And some things I probably haven't thought about yet too

Always mod my cars but the peeps on here have upped the bar of what can be done to the GTi mk5.

Redrobin, Hurdy, Gaz, Ben , Jonny 28, Rob mk5, just to name a few have made me broke , but its worth it !

Also T_T has saved me money on not buying useless crap !

I think I have modded all my cars, I'm attracted to the car as it is but I like to have something a bit different and to my taste. Standard cars are always a compromise, unless you drop enough cash for a Scuderia or LP640.

Always modded my a cars a bit, remap, new wheels maybe, but never as much as when I got the first GTi, then is just snowballed. I do think think this site and the people on here have got alot to answer for

....

I had no plans to mod my GTI until it arrived and I immediately found I was dissatisfied with the over-soundproofed cabin - I had a straight-six BMW with a great exhaust sound as standard and consider hearing the engine of any vehicle I drive as a real driving aid.

I didn't discover this site until fairly recently but found Tyresmoke while waiting for my GTI delivery and met a few of the R32 guys who were more into modding. There's no doubt that modding ideas get networked and encouraged if you frequent an enthusiasts community like this one. Driving a few modded GTI's didn't help either!

The fact is that, excellent as the stock GTI is, individualising it and improving what's already there is very satisfying if you enjoy spirited driving when the conditions are safe and appropriate.

The shared knowledge and help on such a site as this is invaluable in getting things right.

Future mods? - I've given up saying none but have no idea what's next, if any. My suspension actually needs revision. I want to keep my Mk5 GTI and so won't push that performance envelope too much.

It is a very slippery slope!

Will always remap any T/C cars as IMO it's the best bang for buck you can get and has always been reliable.
Problem with this site is trying to not go any further..

Yep this site has a lot to answer for when it comes to modifying (and getting people to buy project cars)

Milltek DP and cat being fitted tomorrow and torque insert while there at it )

....I assume it's being installed by one of their approved agents as opposed to Milltek themselves.

Could you please ask them what they would advise about when a remap is best added - How soon after a TBE, or that they think it doesn't matter how much later.

Thanks :afro:

Hi Robin,

It's actually a friend who owns a garage that is fitting for me. It's funny you should ask about the remap as I asked Superchips the same question when uploading the Stage2 version of Bluefin knowing I was having the DP fitted, and for what it's worth they said to load the map anyway.

Have always modded cars and always will do!! I was dreaming away the other day and was wondering what cars I would buy if I won the lottery and what I would do with the GTI. I came to the conclusion that the GTI would have to stay but I would spend an absolute fortune on modding it!! Big turbo, lots of carbon fibre, wheels, suspension etc etc. Modding is in the blood!!

would have always got the car chipped as previously seen the benefits on my old mini cooper and that was 10-15 bhp increase so after seeing bluefin did one for the edition 30 it was no brainer with 70 bhp gains...  but

due to this website it has led to milltek tbe which i would not have considered before and soon to be coil overs yet to be decided on brand either pss10 or the pro street s depending commision over next few months  and poss breaks also depending on that too.

thanks very much to all for the good advice
