I've been doing a few more motorway miles in my 16v Mk2 recently and I've managed to get the car upto a reported 34mpg doing about 65-70mph on the M1.
Is that likely to be accurate?
How is the MPG measured by the MFA? Is it actually using a meter to measure the amount of fuel flowing to the engine or does it just calculate it from speed/revs/etc?
Also how accurate are the temperature readouts?
I tend to get above 100 degrees on long journeys in the day for oil temp.
Anyone?

i have had upto 34/35mpg on mine doing bout 80mph.
-
::)
me two, that seems about normal. ;)
-
i can get mine to say in the high 40's but mine is an 8v.
it works out fule consumption by reading the vacuum off the inlet manifold , a computer chip then measures this against, speed impulses (the things that make your speedo work) and revs etc to get an approximate figure. i would say it is pretty accurate!
temperature is pretty accurate as well i have an dial type temperature gauge and both of them correspond accordingly.

Ok, i keep meaning to work out my MPG by filling up, driving for a whhile etc.... But i reckon its about 40ish. If your saying that in a 1.8 you get in the high 40's i have a large fuel consumption, cos i only have a 1.3, and i dont drive too harshly!!? How many miles would ?10 do you?
-
you are prob getting less mpg than me cos yours is a carburettor engine so is inherently less fule friendly, a carb is like spitting randomly into the inlet manifold and hoping the right amount of fuel gets to each cylinder. fuel injection is a controlled amount of fuel, usually sprayed direct into the cylinder, acording to engine conditions at the time so is there fore inherently more efficient.
also your engine works harder than mine because it has to pull around similar weight but with less power to work with therefore more fuel is used
also has your car got 5 gears?
and digifant injection was designed with certain environmental considerations, moreso than your 1.3.
i used to get around 8o miles out of a tenner in my crusty old 1.3.
anither thing to take into accont is the state and condition of your engine, fuel filters, air filters should be clean cos that will lower fuel consumption if they arent.
sorry dont mean to sound preachy! (and im not dissing your car!)
-
Thats cool, i know you not dissing, besides i'm used being treated differently cos i cant go as fast?! It just seems weird that a 1.8 would have better fuel consumption than a 1.3?! I get around 100 miles to every ?10, so i guess thats good. If i take the cold air intake off the warm supply as its summer now, that might give me a bit more.
On a half-related note, can i upgrade to injection?
-
technically you could upgrade but it would mean an engne swap, either to early kjet 8v or 16v kjet but the amount of work you would have to do is big, brakes suspension, fuel pumps wiring different gearbox, clutch etc etc ............
-
Probably just buy an 8V one day then!!
-
sound like a good idea, dont be ashamed of your 1.3 tho its how i started, mine was an A reg with 229000 miles on the clock, i sold it and it didnt die till 242000miles! :o it was crusty tho but it converted me cos it was better and more reliable than my saxo hoe
-
I get about 100 miles for ?10 in my mk2 1.8 16V, on a longer journey, considerable less around town or when giving it death!!
mike
-
I'm FAR from ashamed! The only reason i would get a GTI isn't really the speed, its the little extras like PAS, electric windows, air-con and stuff, which is difficult to fit in mine i'm told (well some of it).
p.s you never did say how far ?10 would go in your GTi?!
-
::)lmao
saxo hoe!
sh!t, i hate them cars >:(

Thats pretty much what i get. I generally just don't take note of what its on, just put ?10 in after i've done 100.

I travel from Stirling to Aberdeen which is 120 miles. I have a 16v and I use a 1/4 of a tank to get up there and a 1/4 to get home again, thars sitting about 70-75 mph. The first week I got 360 to a full tank as for 1/2 a tank it got nailed! The second week I got 420 as I didn't nail it.
Does anybody think these new ecotec valves would make a difference to the fuel economy as everyone that I know that has put one in their car says their getting an extra 50 miles to a full tank.
-
good luck finding a mk2 with air con! i wish!
i get about 100 miles plus from a tenner but i always fill right up, i get nearly 400 miles from a tank if i stretch it.
i did use a WHOLE! :o tank coming back from gti interantional tho and that was 160 miles (i think) and 45 mins in traffic! :o that sucked but it was fun! ;D
and yeah my saxo was proper s**t

oh and 4 wheel drive. and a supercharger. :)
-
yeah yeah im jealous already jv, no need to rub it in :P
-
I'm sure if you really wanted to you could put air con in!! Bodge it in from another car!! VW may well still sell the parts, ok so it would probably cost more than the cars worth, but hey!!
