Hi guys and girls
I`m a 31 yr old bloke from rotherham working in the steel industry.
I`ve just found and registered with the site after searching for info on gti golfs.
I`m in the process of buying a 1997 2000cc gti is this a mk2 or mk3 golf the google searches weren`t giving me any help hopefully
i can get some help now.
is there anything in particular that i`m suppose to look for on the golf it only done 62500 miles two genuine lady owners from new
well cared with full history not all vw dealership though and all previous mots to show mileage i know the bloke who`s selling it and his wife.
what do i need to look for engine/gearbox wise knocking noises/rattles etc would the belt need changing straight away if nothing is in the paperwork oops is it a belt or timing kit needed if its going to be changed.
is there anything electrical i need to search for and basically anything i`ve not mentioned.
sorry for the essay i`ve always wanted a gti and i dont want to buy a cash machine if you know what i mean.
nearly forgot what can be done to the gti in the performance and styling departments,
is there a what to do and not to do list on the golf.
i`m looking forward to owning a gti just want to make sure it`s ok
thank you

Welcome
1997 VW would either be a late MKIII or an early MKIV
As for info, you need to post in the relevant section when you know for sure what MK it is

Welcome
Sounds like it will be a MK3, is it the 8v or 16v?
I hope you got a lot of spare cash! (you should do as they're reliable!) The modding bug will bite soon enough
