Getting a petrol smell when cold and popping when warm. CO level is at about 1.5 and idle is bang on. MPG is brilliant too. Exhaust is throaty (aren't all 8V's) but I know it has a slight blow from a joint. I know you lot can piece this puzzle!
Also what's a reasonable price to pay for getting stem seals sorted. I would have a crack myself ,but as its a daily, I can't be without it for the two weeks it would take for me to get my head off :laugh: although I'm only getting the smallest puff of smoke after a really long descent.

poping is more than likely caused by the blow in the exhaust, air + hot exhaust containg unburnt fuel = POP, petoly smell probaly just it running rich on the cold start

If it's a Digifant, replace the blue temp sender on the front of the block.

Nah. The closed throttle switch on the bottom of the throttle body is the root of all evil.
At least the blue temp sender can be changed easy in 2 mins.

how bad is the blow, this could throw off the co level? also what is the HC level, if its high you have unburnt fuel being blown out the back from incomplete combustion due to it running lean. Mine had all of your symptoms and thats what it was!

mmm good point. Its not a big blow, but the popping did improve a little after I cranked the CO up. Gonna replace the exhaust this weekend hopefully and do me vacs and bluey for good measure. Is there any other symptoms of running lean????

the stem seals i was quoted £90 including a skim.
but i got hold of a valve spring compressor, and took me about 20 mins to remove all valves and seals off. Dont know about putting them in though, should be the same as taking them out so shouldnt be hard.

I've got popping too.... it's a digi, blue temp sender replaced, set up as per rubjonny's guide, new exhuast centre section the other day and rest of exhaust checked out ok, co2/idle set up at garage... still popping and (very) occasionally stalls when cool :sad:

Kittie, Was the blue temp sender new from VW?
If the co2 was done, this is strange, maybe the AFM ? RubJ?

stalling points to the idle switch not working right, and if its not working right the co cant be set reliably!
