Title: Buying advice req'd please
Post by: sharman on 15 October 2008, 19:26
I currently have an 07 standard manual GTI and I've just left a deposit on another one at a car supermarket. It's a 56 gti with DSG with 18" monzas etc. It's costing me £500 to swap, I konw it's older, but better specced with DSG.
Anyway, I noticed the numberplates were from a ford garage, not motorpoint where the car was originally from by it's 1 owner! I rang the garage and was told that they had an insurance approved bodyshop.
I was told that the car was stolen/recovered after the keys were nicked from the household. It's had a new front bumper, windscreen, locks/keys.
Don't know what to do as the supermarket told me it was clean and accident free, hardly!!
I can get my deposit back, but should I make a fuss?

I would string them up by their short and curleys for lying to you. If you really want the car.. ask for a straight swap

But personally I would stay well away

You could be letting yourself in for a world of trouble.

agree with everyone else , only thing i would say is that if you really want it, to use it as a bargaining tool to get more off it / money going your way

Don't touch it with a barge pole! Stolen recovered you're asking for all sorts of issues.

I bought an Audi A4 a few years ago that turned out to be Stolen recovered - the aircon was knackered, it cost £1k to sort it and the car was damaged underneath.

Luckily I managed to get the repair costs back, but I got rid as soon as I could.

Run away. Fast.

Stick with what you have .... DSG may be nice but it isn't worth the potential grief you are looking at !

othings wrong with mine, just always fancied a DSG with 18" monzas, cd multichanger, winterpack, parking sensors and multifunction sw. It was only £500 to swap. That's a 56 reg with 10K miles, mines 07 reg with 15K miles. Thanks for everyones advice, I think I'll walk!

Very Wise

Personally I would never swap mine for an older car unless it was and older different car for example and RS4 something along those lines.

Stolen recovered means it will be registered with the DVLA as being stolen/recovered...

If you turned upto our garage and we did a hpi check on the car, it would come up as stolen/recovered and we probably wouldnt touch it whatsoever...

It may be 500 quid less now but when you come to sell it you will lose a lot more than that, you would be mad to go for this IMO.

i sold a Standard march 07 GTi and bought a feb 07 Ed30, and pocketed £2000 back in my hand.

Best buy for me. Deals are there to be had, as long as service History backs your decision

Cancelled my purchase with Motorpoint today, after telling them I knew it was stolen recovered. They wouldn't refund my £500 deposit back on my card, as that would incur a small cost for them! I've now got to wait 7-10 days for a cheque, rang trading standards and they have up to 30 days by law. It just stinks that they take your money, then mess you about refunding it.

Anyway, Motorpoint are now putting the GTI back on its website for sale at £12999 ref 293985. The reg is FP56 UBN, you have been warned!

Meanwhile, how do I get an ED30 and cashback???

my opinion is go volkswagen approved, that way you got the dealer backup and you know the car is kosher! as others have said there are deals to be had and at the moment its a buyers market so take your time and haggle as much as poss cos these dealers are not selling much at the mo and will take what they can get!
