on the mk1 cabby i have in my garage, its my friends car and is being restored.....slowley :lipsrsealed:
but there is a noise coming from the drivers side rear wheel, sound like the fuel pump is sucking air in?? does this sound familir to anybody :undecided: any easy fixes or is a new fuel pump needed!!

if its a later one they have a lift pump, if this is dead or not plugged in then this might casue the sound you mention?

You sure it hasn't got a punture!?!?!
Seriously, if the fuel pump was pulling in air, then it would be leaking too, and stink of fuel.
Is it when the engine is running, ignition on, or everything off.
If it's when its running, have a look behind the splash guard at the front of the wheel arch, where all the tank breather pipes run, maybe one has split and is 'whistling air'

its when the ignition is on and engine running, it also does it when the key is turned all the way but engine not on. im sure it the electric fuel pump as its been sat outside for 3 years before we got it. is it possible that its "gunked" up. its almost like its trying to suck petrol through, but its not going through?? sorry i cant explain it very well. also the car cuts out under medium/hard acceloration.

so does it have the lifter pump or not? ;)

If it's a GTI then I'd also check the fuel relay. It's probably the big relay at the top left of the fuse box. Take it out and give the connections a bit of sand paper action.
