Visited the Nurburgring last sunday for the first time. Couldn't resist taking it out for one lap. Was very busy however due to the good weather, so many closures due to accidents, and subsequently little spread of the traffic over the ring. We had to wait for almost two hours before we could enter the Ring. One lap was enough for the first time

Thanks for all the great comments!
I would certainly advice anybody to go and do a lap. At least you have then earned the rhe right put the Ring sticker on the back of your car.
Regarding the lap, I was just taking it easy, and making sure you make it to the end. Didn't want to be one of those guys who stuffs it in the armco on it's first lap. But accidents do happen, the track was at least closed 4 times or so whilst we were there.
Just position yourself on the right hand side well to give quicker cars space to pass on the left, watch your mirrors, and indicate to the right to signal you have seen the quicker people and that they can pass. I found discipline of the most cars quite good, a lot of them will indicate to the left that they will pass you and give you space whilst overtaking.
As it is a public road (unrestricted toll road) German road rules apply, which means overtaking is only allowed on the left hand side and that is closely followed by everybody. That means that you as a slower car will have to stick to the right, and be passed only on the left. Even if this means you're on the racing line and the faster car will have to go around.
And you will be passed, especially on a busy day like last sunday! I spent about 75% of the time looking in the mirrors, don't expect to be able drive the best racing lines. GT3's flying by all the time, and these in turn being overtaken by the locals in old stripped and caged Golf II's and Polo's!
One these first laps of the ring, taking the racing line and speed is an ambition too far anyway, it's too hard a circuit for that. I had a leaky DV and was only pushing out 180 hp or so in my estimation, and never felt a lack of power in my lap.
But besides doing a lap, it is worth a visit. Quite a nice selection of cars to be seen, and been driven around. I believe I even saw more 911's there than in Kensington, and that is saying something. And most of these the pretty hardcore GT3 and GT3 RS variants
And it is a beautiful area, and the B-roads to the Ring are great as well. Just watch your speed, I'm expecting a little souvenir photo from the Polizei in the mailbox soon....
-
They must have a field day in that area catch people speeding to and from the ring.

best quote eva. i would sig this if i had any space left.

I think your sig there mate has gone past being a joke, sounds like a little bit of jealousy that to me!
-
thats all sharpie is, a jelouse little "ghay" () boy!
-
"Mk5 GTI, optional black, optional heated seats, didn't go for the sat nav or audio packs, 3 years outstanding finance, parkings sensors cos i'm a woman, shopping list forum sig, carbon fibre sticky on bits with no weight saving purpose, ten pot brakes even though i'm never on a track"
Hmm, It's not Sharpie's fault, he's just a wee bit immature, probably a wee bit inadequte too and possibly - just possibly a wee bit inaccurate :smug:
-
i'm not jealous at all, i've already been to the nurburgring and look forward to going again next year. as for my sig, if you want to discuss it, by all means, create a new topic and i shall
discuss it tear you to pieces there, rather than ruining this guy's ring thread.
-
And moving swiftly on..
nice pics, if i ever get the mk1 project up and running the goal is to get it to the 'ring
enjoy the new sig sharpie, a gift from me to you

TBH, it's busy all the time now. The busiest times are when it's open for a full weekend. I'd advise you to incorporate some weekdays if you can, like Thurs-Tues or something similar because it's generally quieter. I'd also advise making the effort to get up early and get there when the track opens each morning (8am) and also the last hour tends to be reasonably quiet. The middle of the day in the height of summer is usually a no-no and I normally use that time to go spectating at different points around the track.

You aren't supposed to time your laps on the 'ring. Quite a few do, but I've been advised against it in the past.
Anyone know where you can get 'ring insurance and how much it is likely to be? I can't see my insurer stumping up if I punt it into the Armco :undecided:

try and get a track day or 2 in before we go and just dont drive like a cock and know your limits and you will be fine and you have good brakes now  so you should stop quicker
-
Ring your insurer and ask if there are any exclusions on the continent, mention autobahns and toll roads.. and even get it in writing. After all its just a public toll road, and not a race track.

Yeah, but I'm with AF and I know from past threads on other forums that they have refused to pay up for the Nordschleife even though it is classed as a public toll road like you say.
-
Yeah.. they're one of the ones that actually list it as an exclusion :undecided:
-
Didn't time my lap as:
*My first time on the Ring, don't know the track
*Way too busy, spend most of my time not following racing lines but staying to the right to give space to the fast guys.
I believe a GTI can do it a bit under 9 mins: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XmI57FGDVUw&feature=related (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XmI57FGDVUw&feature=related)
-
Very nice report Bolle.
Mid week later in the day is less busy (less hungover too).
Your first lap will always be in your memory.
-
Well you guys all seem to be pretty set on a trip out there. Can I just offer some suggestions and make some comments?
Don't time your laps - you're all talking about going for what are known as Tourist Fahren (TF) sessions - this is when the road is open as a public road to cars and bikes together. As it is a public road, being caught timing will mean that your insurance is invalid, especially if you were found to be timing at the time of an incident.
As someone has said German traffic laws apply. In addition to this, as the place is run by Nurburgring GmbH (a private company) there are what are often described as Hausrecht - house rules. This means they top up the laws with their own rules - no video or stills cameras in cars during TF. Get caught filming, timing, or get caught driving like a tosser and you can be banned, maybe for a day, a week, a season, or even life-time.
There is an EU accord for motor insurance across Europe. In every country in the EU your UK insurance provides the minimum level of cover required to drive in that country. This means you have third party insurance cover on your standard UK insurance.
Track day insurance cannot be bought to cover TF sessions - it's an open road, not a track.
PLEASE don't call your insurer and ask 'am I insured on the Nurburgring?'. The answer WILL be 'no'. The more people ask, the more exclusions will be included and the more difficult it will be to get insurance to drive there. Check your policy document (even if you're with Flux - it's another broker who thinks they have blanket exclusions).
Claims that you have heard being refused are for damage to the driven car. Damage to Armco and other cars IS covered, provided there are no written exclusions in your policy document.
I've stayed at the Dorint, personally I think it's a soulless Euro-bland hotel. There are far more friendly hotels where you can stay, which are cheaper and you will enjoy far more of the spirit of the 'ring.
I've posted a bit more information here (http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=94676.0).
Oh and this is a great photo:
....if you want everyone to know you're a big girl who was too scared to drive one of the most thrilling and unique parts of the 'ring (the Karussell).
And of COURSE it's possible to drive the 'ring in under 9 minutes in a Golf. Here's (http://www.vimeo.com/1665139)a video of someone doing an 08:50 in a Golf MKII 16V, of course.
